5 Beauty Essentials I Can’t Live Without
Mon, 25 June 2012 4:12PM
Choosing the five beauty products that every woman should own is a daunting task. In my opinion asking a beauty junkie to choose between products is like asking a politician to answer a question without spin; it’s just not going to happen.
So I thought I’d be cheeky and cheat a little (you’ll all forgive me, right?) and narrow the playing field by assuming you already own all the beauty essentials – think mascara, foundation, cleanser, a hairbrush and the like. Yep, I think that’s a pretty safe bet. After eliminating a large chunk of the playing field, the task at hand suddenly became a lot easier.
If Mila Kunis’ recent beauty looks are anything to go by, we’re guessing black eye liner and fake tan would be at the top of her list.
So what are the five beauty products every woman should own? I’m glad you asked.
1. A bright lipstick that makes you feel like a million dollars.
For years I have said it, but I’ll say it again: bright lips are the bomb! Nothing perks me up after a big night, or makes me feel more confident than a bright lip. And luckily for us, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to dip your foot into bright lipstick than now. So, get yourself down to the shops and have a play around with colour – red, orange, pink, red, whatever. Go ahead and try it, I dare you!
For a total splurge, try Sisley Hydrating Long Lasting Lipstick, $62, from David Jones.
2. A fabulous illuminator that will make you look wide awake and oh-so-pretty, even when you’ve barely slept a wink.
Let’s be honest, not many of us are blessed with that celebrity perfect skin that seems to glow from within. But we can get it (with a little help). ILLUMINATOR! Doesn’t it sound magical? The perfect product to take your dull complexion to glorious heights, illuminator looks fabulous applied anywhere you need a ‘lift.’ You can mix it through your foundation or tinted moisturizer for an all over glow, or apply it on its own. Prepare to be complimented.
3. A signature scent.
Fragrance is powerful. Finding your signature fragrance is an intimate experience that takes time and patience, but is so worth it. Every woman should have a fragrance that makes them feel beautiful, confident and happy, so what are you waiting for? Time to experiment. We love Salvatore Ferragamo Signoria, EDP 50ml, $110, 02 8070 1405.
4. Sea salt spray for getting summer texture all year round.
I’m a recent convert to the church of sea salt spray. I love it and rarely go a day without it. You see, sea salt spray is the secret for beach-like waves minus an hour of styling. Not only that but it also gives my flat hair that always looks too neat a little grit so it becomes a dream to style. If you aren’t worshipping at the altar of sea salt spray yet, you will be soon. Try: Toni & Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray, $15.99.
5. It may be boring, but sunscreen is non-negotiable.
Every woman must own a sunscreen that they apply (and reapply) liberally to their skin everyday. To make this easier, multi purpose products like daily moisturisers with SPF are a girl’s best friend. Just make sure you pick a product that is SPF30 and offers broad-spectrum protection. You’ll be thanking me in 10 years time when your skin is as youthful as it is today. Try: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Lotion SPF 30, $17.99, from pharmacies and supermarkets.
Now excuse me while I go to the shops…

1. Bright lipstick
2. Neutral lipstick
3. Don’t do drugs or drink excessively
4. Handcream
5. Sunscreen
Girls. Look after your skin, wear sunscreen & don’t sunbake. You won’t need surgery/expensive treatments later on. I’m in my 40s and look early 30s. Women who haven’t done drugs nor drunk excessively usually look really good. Those who have lived a party lifestyle can look much older than their years. Look at women in your local shopping centre and you’ll see what I mean.
