Face Yoga: The Who, The What, The Why

Thu, 6 September 2012 9:13AM

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining Sonia and David on Mornings. We chatted (read: laughed) about facial yoga, tried some moves and discussed what it’s all about. In between giggles, we got to the crux of this emerging beauty trend and discovered that there’s method to the madness.

Here’s the video (with terrible subtitles unfortunately)…

With celebrity advocates like Jen Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow, face yoga is fast building popularity. Essentially, it’s a series of facial exercises that you do in order to tone, brighten and lift your face and facial muscles. It’s like a workout for your lips, eyes, brow and cheeks.

So why do face yoga? Followers believe that by increasing circulation and strengthening the muscles in your face, you’re warding off wrinkles and slowing the ageing process. It does make sense, you work on lifting and toning your bum, thighs, arms and stomach, so why not your face? In addition, it’s an all-natural alternative to anti-ageing, saving you the pain of Botox or going under the knife.

Anther benefit of face yoga is that there’s no specific routine. You simply repeat a few of your favourite ‘poses’ for around 10 minutes a day until you start seeing results. But hey, while I’m all for healthy, holistic living don’t chuck out your skincare just yet; use it in conjunction with face yoga, sun protection and a healthy lifestyle and all of these elements will help slow that ever-ticking clock. Nothing on its own will. Well, noting natural anyway.

Tell me Primpers…

What do you think of face yoga?

Have you tried it?

I feel like simply by speaking, smiling, laughing, frowning etc, that my facial muscles are moving enough on a daily basis (much more than my butt anyway). Seems a little strange to be exercising it any more.

The lady that developed facial exercises in the 80′s looks absolutely incredible for her age (now 65, but looks 45). She was interviewed in America last week (can’t remember which channel). She’s never had any botox or facial surgery/procedures. I’m so going to try doing facial exercises. Makes so much sense really!!

Never tried it, never heard of it before. But I disagree with the yoga might reduce wrinkles bit. Wouldn’t increased exercise make the wrinkles deeper? Certainly Gwynnie when she featured on Glee last year didn’t look smooth and wrinkle-free.

I think I’d feel way too silly giving this one a go … it would be good for a laugh at least.

I have heard about this many times before, and to me it does make sense, and I would love to incorporate it into my beauty routine…..but think I would forget. I guess it can be done while watching telly or when driving and waiting at traffic lights.

I do some face yoga now and then,….when I actually think about it. I saw it on TV once, they were showing a few tricks on how to do the yoga. It’s pretty simple the hardest part is remembering to do them.
