Interview: Whitney Port Talks Beachy Hair and Beauty Must-Haves
Tue, 28 August 2012 2:01PM
We got to know Whitney in the glossy reality television show, The Hills, and we followed her to New York as we switched over to The City. After stints in PR and fashion, the dewy-skinned, wavy-haired beauty launched her own label, Whitney Eve, which she showed during last week’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Sydney. We were lucky enough to recently get some beauty-talk time with the lovely Ms Port… Enjoy!

PRIMPED: Welcome back to Australia! What do you think about Aussie hair and makeup looks?
Whitney Port: I love them because they are really beachy, fresh and natural, which I think is reflective of how I like to look, or at least strive to look.
P: What are the top makeup tips you’ve picked up on set?
WP: You can use toilet seat covers as oil absorbing sheets for your face! Who knew!?
P: And the top hairstyling tricks and techniques?
WP: I learned how to curl my hair. I know that sounds easy, but it takes a lot of time and bad curls to finally learn how to achieve that perfect wavy curl. It took some time, but now I have it down. One of the producers on The City was a master waver so I owe it all to her! Thanks Jess!
P: You’ve got beach waves down pat. Can you share your top tips for recreating the look at home?
WP: I usually just let my hair air-dry earlier in the day. At night when I want to spruce up my look a little I will take my 1″ barrel curling iron and curl chunks at a time. Always curl away from your face with the tip of the iron facing down. When you are done, the key is to flip your hair over and shake it out with your hands. Spritz a little hair spray while flipped over and you now have a head full of voluminous yet beachy waves.
P: What’s your secret for keeping your hair looking so shiny and healthy?
WP: Good shampoo and conditioner is key. My favourite is Enjoy (not available in Australia). I also use the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-in Product (not available in AustralIa); You spritz it in your hair after you wash it and it leaves it feeling so soft and healthy. Moroccanoil Treatment (from $26.50, call 1300 437 436) is a great addition too but only on the tips as it will make your roots greasy.
P: You often work an amazing braid. Can you DIY? And do you have a favourite style?
WP: I can braid my hair but I am still not able to French or fishtail my own hair. I always ask my older sister to French braid my hair. I feel like it’s one of those things I will have to learn if I ever have a daughter.
P: What’s your favourite fragrance?
WP: I love Trish Mcevoy no 3 (not available in Australia) and Le Labo Ambrette 9 (Le Labo is available at Mecca Cosmetica, although this particular perfume currently is not).
P: What are the three makeup products you swear by?
WP: Fresh High Noon Tinted Moisturiser (not available in Australia), Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler ($40, from selected David Jones), and Lucas’ Papaw Ointment (from $3.95, from pharmacies) – which I found in Aus!
P: Can you talk us through your skincare routine?
WP: My routine is quite lengthy. Most of my products are from The Finer Skin Institute. I get facials here and swear by every single one of their products. Morning and night I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, tone, moisturise, and apply eye cream. If I have a blemish I will put some sort of drying ointment on at night. If I am feeling extra tired or lazy I will just use makeup remover pads and call it a night! I also try to exfoliate once a week with a beady scrub.
P: What beauty products do you not leave home without?
WP: I always stash my bronzer and a brush in my bag. A little lip cream goes a long way as well.
P: What’s been your biggest beauty blunder?
WP: In high school I tried coloring my hair with an at-home kit. Let’s just say I wore a hat to school for two days until I could get an appointment at the salon for some major color correcting.
P: What’s your signature beauty look?
WP: Fresh and natural. Clean dewy skin, peachy cheek, glossy lip and defined lashes.
P: Who’s your beauty icon?
WP: Christy Turlington.
P: Finally, what’s your favourite …
- Cocktail? The Eastern Standard at Soho House.
- Label? At the moment, Kate Spade and One Teaspoon.
- Holiday destination? Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.
