Oscars: The New Red Lip

Tue, 24 February 2009 12:19PM

Is actually not that red at all, Primpers. It’s more of a browny, Earthy shade really. But with Amy Adams and Anne Hathaway both demonstrating exactly how you should be wearing it, I think it’s safe to say that this shade is THE NEW RED CARPET COLOUR. Me likey.

Alright, here’s Amy.

And, here’s Anne.

Let me put them side by side so you can see a little easier, Primpers.

So, as you can see, the colours are very similar. Amy has gone for a slightly pinker option and it’s much more glossy than Anne’s matte formula. The good thing with a gloss over the top, is that you can’t see if your lips are dry or not. Anne’s on the other foot, are looking a little parched and dry and that, Primpers, is made even more obvious by her matte lipstick. Less dewy options also tend to be more drying on your tips, too, so I usually pop a gloss over my lipstick or go for a hydrating formula, instead. Just a thought.

The colour itself is very red-carpet. Not so much runway. I didn’t see much of this at the Spring/Summer shows, but that doesn’t mean it’s not perfect for a night on the town or that cocktail party you’ve got next Saturday night. Oh, wait, that’s me. Anyway, as you can also see, both girls have fair skin. Note to self, if you’re pale and are a little scared of looking like Tilda Swinton (more on that in a minute), this could be the perfect colour for you as it’s not too out there but still works with your skin tone.

Plus, you can still wear a decent amount of eye makeup. With brighter shades, we usually recommend keeping your eyes pretty simple, but here, both girls have gone nuts with their black eyeliner and Amy has even added some subtle pinky bronze shades to the mix as well. Well done Amy, 4 stars for you.

And as mentioned above, Tilda, who did play by the bare eyes, bright lip rule but for me she just looked a little creepy. I guess I can’t be too harsh, at least she’s actually wearing makeup to the Oscars this year. There are plenty of times in life to not wear makeup, everyday for many of you and that’s BRILLIANT, but the Oscars is probably one of those occasions where just a hint of foundation may be worthwhile.

So, it was great to see Tilds here making an effort, I do LOVE the shade, it’s very radiant and fun, two qualities I search for in a lipstick but I think it’s just a little too bright and a little too fun for her very, very pale skin tone. Perhaps she should have gone for a similar shade to her peers, here.

What do you think, Primpers?

All Tilda needs is a little mascara! Her skin is gorgeous.

I love Tilda with the fire of a thousand suns. I hope she never changes.
