Perfume: The Pro-Au Naturel Argument
Sat, 15 September 2012 5:30PM
We recently ran a feature on the pros of synthetic fragrance. Sam Sample, owner of Be Genki and one of the most gorgeous natural beauties we know, offered to write her side of the argument. So in the interest of a healthy debate, here’s her blog on why her fragrance preference is au naturel …
Many years ago, when starting my deep dive in to the world of natural skin care, personal care and all-things-organic, the first product I threw out from my bathroom cabinet was a bottle of perfume. I vowed never to use conventional fragrances ever again. I was horrified by the effect that synthetic fragrances and fixatives had on my health – the headaches, skin irritations and nausea. And so begun my research into toxic beauty.
My favourite, widely respected author on this topic is Stacy Malkan – co-founder of the ‘Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ and author of the award-winning book Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry. Her research is thorough, unprecedented and impressive to say the least. If you’re at all interested in the natural side of beauty – or lifestyle in general, for that matter – I implore you to read her yourself and make up your own mind.
Call me crazy, but the thought of consciously using a synthetic product when there are perfectly fabulous and harmless alternatives readily available, just doesn’t make sense to me.
So, for 10+ years, instead of spritzing on a little “poison” each morning I have loved the subtle scent of body oils fragranced with 100% pure and natural essential oils.
But, being a girlie girl, I still felt like a little something was missing. Whilst it’s lovely to have the body smelling oh-so-yummy with natural plant extracts, it’s also the extra cherry on top to have a spritz here and there. I personally love to mist fragrance in to my hair as the final finishing touch before walking out the door.
But with today’s fragrance market being dominated by synthetic perfumes, with aroma chemicals and fixatives, what’s a girl to do? Search high and low for perfumes that contain ONLY 100% natural ingredients, and that’s what I did.
The fragrance collection that I fell head over heels in love with, because of the beautiful complexity of scents, was Aura-Soma Pegasus – available in eight different blends such as Pink Lotus, Frangipani, Liquid Elixir, Oudh Incense and Aquatic Flowers. I loved the brand so much that I did what every other girl on a mission would do … order a pallet load to make it available to all Aussies. (Click here for more information on Aura-Soma Pegasus).
Other fab natural fragrance finds: Tsi-La, One Seed, Aromantik, Rich Hippie, and Alkoomie.
What natural fragrances have you discovered?
Or do you like to make your own? Any “secret” recipes?
Sam xx

I don’t use natural fragrances but my mum is one of those who sometimes has really bad reactions to perfumes, she had headaches and nausea. Sad

I have recently thought about giving up perfume, mostly because over the last year I have developed eczema and I don’t think the perfume is helping. Good to know there are some other options out there!!

I love MOR Marshmallow’s perfume. I have One Seed on my wishlist, they sound amazing. I love natural perfumes/scents a lot more than synthetic fragrances. They tend to last longer and stay smelling true longer. I tend to use natural body oils and mists most of the time too.
