RAFW 2011: The lipstick shade scoring rave reviews
Thu, 5 May 2011 12:30PM
Since shimmying its way onto the catwalk a few seasons ago, the bright orange lipstick has remained a firm favourite of mine (and incidentally, many of you) for the past two or so years. The reason? It looks damn hot, Primpers, and as Liz Kelsh, makeup director for the Yeojin Bae show just proved, its stronghold isn’t over just yet.
Funnily enough, today was the day I decided to ditch my taupe smoky eye for a bright lip, with my colour of choice being the delightful Maybelline ColorSensational in Coral Crush, topped off with Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Coral Reef. Both of which work wonderfully together if you’re in the market for a new corally orange lip shade.
But backstage at Yeojin, it was all about the M.A.C products, with the makeup artists using the brand’s LipMix in Orange to create the stunning look for the show. The key was to have it a little transparent, as the transparency of the clothes was where Liz’s inspiration arose, pairing the pop of colour on the lips with foundation-free skin that ‘spoke for itself’ without the drama of makeup attached. All that was used on the face was a touch of concealer, some taupe blush for contouring, and custom-blended essential oils for to give the cheeks that healthy, highlighted lift.
Top Tip: Use said essential oils instead of your regular highlighter or illuminator to create a reflective finish to your cheeks. Apply it to your cheekbones, brow bones and even the arch of your lips for something soft and naturally beautiful. Winner.
Here’s the look Liz created for the show…
And here’s the LipMix you might want to get your hands on…
It was good times at Camilla and Marc last night too, Primpers, with the brand also cashing in on the orangey red lip trend. Lancôme’s National Makeup Expert, Michael Brown, custom-blended a delightful red and coral lipstick (Red Paris #152 and Idole #134, if you’re wondering) combination to reveal this winning shade…
If, like me, you’re completely sold on this lipstick shade, may I suggest following Liz and Michael’s lead and pairing said bright shades with flawless, naturally enhanced cheekbones and bare eyes (save for a lick of mascara. Or two.)
Tell me Primpers…
Do you love an orange lip shade too?
What are your favourite orange lipsticks?
What do you think of that tricky little essential oil tip? Worth a try?

Orange lippy is a fav of mine. I have a couple from Rimmel and Revlon that I love. As for the essential oil tip, remember to dilute in a carrier oil as some essential oils are too harsh to put directly on your skin.

I love love love that Lancome lip combination! The Red Paris #152 and Idole #134 create such a lovely shade! They should bottle it and sell it as a brand new one (and it would save us having to buy two!)

I’ve tried an orange lippy once but it had a pretty gross taste for some reason. This LipMix looks amazing.. tempting!

I’m a huge fan of orange. It’s more fun than red and can be easier to pull off if you have the right shade. Morange by mac is a pretty cool colour, as is mac CB96, which is a more subtle pinky-orange with a bit of shimmer. I’ve also had a lot of fun with lip mixes in the past.

Sadly I can’t pull off the orange lip. My skin tone just won’t allow it.
Would love to know what the custom blended mix of essential oils was! Sounds like a great idea

Just gorgeous colours, especially the MAC and wish I could pull it off..softer coral or rosy shades suit me better my fave being EL gloss in Passionfruit. I like the EO tip very much.
Karen makes a very good point re: some EOs need to be diluted. Some EOs shouldn’t be ingested either….just cos it’s natural doesn’t mean it can’t be harmful.

I like orange on the lips although I tend to prefer a gloss to a lipstick.
