Try Now: A Big Beauty Night In

One thing I remember about beauty from my teenage years: it’s never only just about the makeup.
Beauty isn’t simply about how well you apply your lipstick, or if your eyeshadow matches your eye colour. It’s also about taking care of yourself. And sometimes we just need a little pampering to make ourselves look and feel better.
As we get older, we tend to forget about the importance of self-pampering and see it as a luxury some of us just can’t afford (at least not until our next payday).
But another thing I also remember from back in the day: the articles in my Dolly magazines about how to have a pampering night-in. Obviously, you were too young to go out and do anything else. But that’s beside my point…
So my advice to you, lovely Primpers, is to re-visit your teenagehood: take out those face masks, pop out the hair treatments, grab that foot scrub – and go nuts!
Throw on some lady tunes – my preference is Lana Del Rey, but if you want to go the full swing and belt out a bit of Shania Twain’s ‘Man! I Feel like a Woman’ – well, I say whatever floats your boat!
Now, grab a nice glass of wine (or Milo) and start your night of all-about-you.
For a smooth-flowing session, it’s best to do things in order of convenience. So start by taking all your make up off, and give your face a good cleanse with something gentle. I’ve been using Biore Skin Preservation Clean Things Up Nourishing Gel Cleanser, $16.99, from pharmacies. It’s very soft on the skin, it’s hypo-allergenic, and it doesn’t disturb your skin’s natural moisture balance. My face always feels so supple after I use it, it’s amaze.
Now, onto your face mask. There are many options to choose from; heated, cucumber, exfoliating, soothing, nourishing… I’ve gone for Apivita Express Beauty with Cereals Mask, $7.99, Adore Beauty. Because I have dry skin, this one nourishes and hydrates using valuable vitamins from wheat germ oil, oat and rice extracts, so it only enhances my skin’s pampered new softness.
If your hair is yelling out for some TLC, now is the time to lavish on a treatment, because you’ll save time by having two products on the go at once. Work your hair mask or oil through your lengths, leave it to do its thing for ten minutes, then jump into the shower (or bath if you’re feeling extra classy). Wipe the mask off with a gentle wet cloth in the warm water and shampoo out your hair treatment.
While I’m in the shower, I often like to do a full-body scrub-down – and this pamper night would be the perfect occasion for it, no? One that I cannot go past is Sportsgirl Scrub Up Exfoliating Body Scrub, $9.95, from Sportsgirl stores. It’s amazingly yummy-smelling, and works wonderfully to leave you feeling smooth and soft all over.
Okay, once you’ve rinsed off, hop out of your shower or bath. This is the best time to exfoliate your feet, because the heat of the water has softened the skin. Now I wear terrible shoes, so my feet are a bit rough around the edges (quite literally), so I go at my tootsies with one of those foot files. With a little time and elbow grease, feet are left feeling baby-soft.
Now, let’s leave our feet and return to the face, shall we? While your pores are still a little open, slather on moisturiser or oil for easier absorption. My pick: I’ve just started using Napoleon Perdis Auto Pilot Napoleon Complex Skin Renewal Serum, $79, 02 8595 0911, with its burst of vitamins, berry extracts, and good, happy stuff in general.
Next, spend some time also coating your whole body in a rich moisturiser. I’m talking feet/legs/arms/hands/booty/stomach/shoulders/back (if you can). Try Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula All Over Body Firming Lotion, $7.40, from pharmacies.
Lastly, you may want to end your pampering night with a movie, while wearing your fluffy dressing gown and giving yourself a lovely mani and pedi just to decorate your newly rejuvenated body.
Good for you, I say! You’ve earned it, and your body will thank you for it, too.
So, fellow Primpers, have I inspired you to spoil yourself?
