This week on The Weekly Brush Up, I talk pores. Pore refining, pore cleaning, pore minimising and pore, well, everything.

Enlarged pores and blackheads is a serious skincare concern among your fellow Primpers. While you can’t actually reduce the size of your pores, there are a few things you can do to reduce the appearance of these pesky buggers, so your skin looks all flawless and fabulous and fresh.

Here are my suggestions…

And here are the notes for those of you who can’t watch it yet…

1. Cleansing. All the gunk and grime, sweat and makeup that accumulates on your face settles into your pores, eventually oxidising and turning black; like a half eaten apple left on the kitchen bench. This in turn creates blackheads. Common sense would suggest that cleaning all that grot away will definitely help with the appearance of your pores. The new shu uemura skin purifier porefinist, $65 is specially formulated to treat this exact condition, containing enzymes to breakdown and wash away impurities before they have a chance to settle in for the night, week, month, year. Good one!

2. Exfoliating.  I only have good things to say about facial wipes. They make life very handy. Especially when they cleverly incorporate exfoliating beads into the cloth, making skin refining even easier. The new Nivea Pure Effect 3-in-1 Exfoliating Wipes, $7.50 (on sale mid July), are double sided, allowing cleaning AND exfoliating in one (or two) simple swipes. The real star of these wipes is the addition of Magnolia Bark Extract, an ingredient known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties – two things you really want if you suffer pore issues.

3. Masks. Masks are a great way to spot treat, refine and add radiance to a dull complexion. Essentially, when you have dead skin, excess oil and a build-up of makeup and dirt, your skin will look dull, lacklustre and lifeless. By using a purifying mask or AHA-based peel, you can instantly clear away all that stuff that makes your skin dull and reveal a whole new, radiant you. Amazing! My picks: Palmer’s Purifying Mask, $9.99 to draw out imperfections and tighten pores, or the soon-to-be-released Elizabeth Arden Peel and Reveal Revitalizing Mask, $55 (on sale 5th August) to gently re-awaken tired skin.

4. Hydrate and Treat. If reoccurring breakouts, blackheads and whiteheads are your main skincare concern, you need to look for a product containing salicylic acid – an ingredient that helps dissolve oil that’s settled into your pores and prevent future blockages. Something like Priori Advanced AHA Perfection Gel, $120, uses the complex powers of salicylic acid, vitamins A, C and E, and lactic acid to hydrate, resurface and treat the signs of ageing all at the same time.

Tell me Primpers…

I tried the Palmer’s Purifying Mask and it didn’t work for me. So I gave it away to a friend. I’ve been struggling with blackheads for a while now and I still am looking for a solution.

Great suggestions – Im loving the existing Elizbeth Arden Peel & Reveal mask, and also MD Formulations masks and cleansers – combined they make my skin clearer than anything else I’ve ever tried.

It’s so true about pores (unfortunately). Another product I’m fond of to reduce the appearance of pores is Benefit’s Porefessional which is a primer. What I like to do is apply a thin layer of Porefessional then a thin layer of foundation and repeat with the Porefessional and another thin layer of foundation. I apply in thin layers because the foundation would just look cakey otherwise. Hope this helps some of us!

Hey Yaz! Thanks for sharing about products that help to reduce the appearance of pores! I now don’t have to worry about wearing a thin layer of foundation when I go to work, unlike previous times where I slapped on tons of foundation in the hopes of “covering” up my enlarged pores. Which, by the way, only results in magnifying my flaws to the rest of the world to see.

On a side note, I cannot help but notice the tweed jacket you were wearing in the video -is it Chanel?

Thanks for yet another round of weekly products sharing with us, Primpers! :)

Thank you so much, Eva. Alas, not Chanel. It was a lovely little New York purchase from Zara and was an absolute steal. Not sure if it’s still available as I bought it late last year, but you never know your luck in a big city. Yx

I do have a problem with pores but i’ve also done cert IV beauty therapy and know that theres no product out there that can fix them/make them smaller, unfortunately.Ive just finished a second tube of that palmers mask and still love it, it’s so cheap, doesn’t have a strong scent making it good for my sensitive skin and makes me look smooth and refreshed.bonus :)

    Hi Yas,
Great post! Just wondering, do you know any good alternatives to the AHA perfection gel that isn’t anti-aging (I think it will be too heavy for my combination skin).
