Get More Bang For Your Beauty Buck
Thu, 12 July 2012 11:37AM
I want serious bang for my beauty buck, so I often peel off my old, sceptical peepers and adorn “fresh eyes” when peering into my beauty kit.
You’d be amazed at how many bits in there can offer double the love (and how interesting it is to own four pairs of eyes!)
Here’s my fave; for nigh on 15 years, I’ve been donning Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream, $38, from department stores on my lids. Daily. I still get asked (almost daily) what eyeshadow I’m wearing. Even from makeup artists.

Seeing as one tube lasts longer than a season of Mad Men on slow mode (or is that just me?), that to me is one big BANG!
Go forth. Try it. I am yet to trademark the look, so it’s all yours.
And while you’re at it Primpettes, delve deeper into your beauty kit and see what else can double the love, daily.
(Disclaimer: ecb and PRIMPED take no responsibility for nail shellac being used as a skin primer or lipstick as eyeliner. Just saying.)
Concealer as an eye colour:
Who needs eye-popping pigment when your lashes can do all the talking? Try patting on a very fine amount of concealer over the eyelids and following with a brush of bronzer. Lash up big for full effect.
Gloss as cheek tint:
A given. Lanolips 101 Lip Ointment, $17.95, from Adore Beauty, gets my vote in this case. So sheer and light is the coverage, I often pat it on cheeks as well as my pout when on the hop. But do blend. Please, do blend. Or do join the circus.

Face oil as follicle salve:
This can get greasy, so go easy on roots. But tips of the hair go gaga for oil, so once you’ve applied to the face, run any excess through hair ends with fingertips for added (cheap as chips) hydration. Try Clarins Santal Face Oil, $49, from Adore Beauty.

Blitz brows with Blistex:
Talk about the little product that could! Blistex Intensive Repair, $5.95, from pharmacies, delivers an arrow to the heart of dry lips, but smooth it upwards and across unruly brows and voilà, true full-facial love.

Leave your balm on longer:
Natio Skin Brightening Face Balm, $17.95, from Myer, is intended to be slapped on the face instead of moisturiser to really get to brass tacks of dehydration, but apply it with a heavy hand and leave on for ten minutes for a truly reinvigorated visage.

Bath to bod (and back again):
Don’t double up on bath and body oils. Add a few drops of your favourite body oil to your bath and soak it all up. When you do finally emerge, pat dry skin so that you don’t rub off any of the hydration locked in, or need to apply further moisturiser. For this, I love Bio-Oil, from $14.95, from pharmacies.

Lacquer on the lids:
And I thought my tip was radical. The pigment in Giorgio Armani Skin Lacquers Rouge d’Sheers, $52, from selected David Jones from 30th July is so malleable and supple; it can easily be patted into lids with the fingertips for a natural hint of colour. For a more dramatic look, Mr. Armani’s Aussie experts advise pressing the product onto the eyes with a brush.

What do you think Primpettes?
What makes you put on your earmuffs and duck for cover when it comes to cosmetic tricks?

Ive tried lanolips on the cheeks, its really thick and glossy, but i guess thats better than glittery right? It is really hydrating though. I also love balm through the brows! But i dont know about the lipstick on the eyelids. I saw it in the topshop video and it looked gorgeous but me pulling it off? I dont think so. I could just take the earmuffs to draw away the attention if it goes wrong

I use my Lucas PaPaw ointment for everything! Its great on my lips, on my brows, and i like to use it as an illuminator on my cheeks when i’m out.
If I can get my product to work harder for me (and not spend more $$ on another product that will do the same thing) I’m happy!

David Babaii’s Miracle Oil is supposed to be applied to damp hair before styling and then as a finisher on styled hair. I actually like to use it as a deep conditioning treatment – so I leave it on for 10-15 minutes and then rinse. Works a treat for dry, damaged ends.

Oh gosh….my big thing is using my blush for eye shadow.
My Mum used to work in a Pharmacy and was always getting freebies from the Sales Reps which she would then give to me and one day she gave me a lovely cyclax blush but it was too dark for me so i ended up using it as an eye shadow and received so many compliments on it that its something that ive kept doing and im still receiving positive comments.

i think the clarins beauty flash balm should have got a mention here as it doubles as a thinly applied primer or applied heavily and left of as a mask then tissue off the residue after 15 mins.
