Milan A/W ’12: Gucci goes to art school … and gets an A+

When it comes to make-up, our friends at Gucci love a signature feature. And how. At last season’s show, models sported sooty, black raccoon eyes. The one before, mouths were lacquered a dark and glossy scarlet. We took bets on which standout beauty look would hit the runway this time. In the end, lips won the day. Here’s why we loved the look:
1. They were arty
“Just a touch of Rosetti” is what make-up doyenne Pat McGrath said of the look she created backstage, referencing the muses of Dante Gabriel Rosetti’s 19th century oil paintings. Here’s one now. Isn’t she pretty?

2. They’re totally copyable
While I’ve rarely met a lipstick look I didn’t like, sometimes standout shades can be tricky to get right when you’re not Miranda Kerr. But not this one. Oh no. The black-cherry hue has a purple-y undertone which universally flattering. Don’t believe us? Run to your nearest beauty counter and pick up Covergirl Outlast Double Lipshine in Berry Blast, $18.95 for a high-shine finish or, my current obsession, Clinique Chubby Stick in Richer Raisin, $35, for a sheerer take on the trend. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. Promise.
3. You don’t need to do much else
In a hurry? Make the Gucci look your go-to. McGrath used just a hint of foundation, some taupe eyeshadow and a slick of mascara on top lashes only to accessorise her pre-Raphaelite lips. Which would take you two minutes, max.
*A small word of warning: We need to talk about brows. These ones are bleached. Just when we’d breathed a sigh of relief that bold, bushy arches seemed to be firmly stamped on beauty’s blueprint, Ms McGrath goes and wipes them away again with a wave of her peroxide wand. Word is, she did it because she felt strong brows would make the look more “period” when paired with a dark merlot lip. Well, maybe. But does that mean you should bleach yours in agreement? No. No, it does not. Maybe just go a bit easy on the pencil.
So, will you be unleashing your inner artist and painting on a wine-stained lip à la Gucci come Autumn?
What inspires you when you’re creating a new make-up look?
