New York Fashion Week S/S ’12: How to pull off ladylike skirts, without looking too Mad Men-ish.
Thu, 15 September 2011 12:34PM
I love me a bit of ladylike dressing. A full waisted skirt, quirky court shoes and a structured handbag are all things that make my little heart skip a beat. But sometimes, being a lady can be exhausting, and half way through your Betty Draper-esque get up you want to stop. Well, don’t I have some good news for you! Your laziness is now totally in fashion.
It’s like the fashion mullet, business down the bottom, with a fancy schmancy lady-like skirt, paired with a laid-back shirt at the top. The clever kids at Rodarte (personal fave), J. Crew and Marc by Marc Jacobs show us how it’s done with a slouchy knit, chambray button-up and cute tee respectively. This look is really a win-win, you get more mileage out of your dressier skirts that you usually save for evening ‘dos by teaming them with a relaxed top AND you get 124 bonus Style Points from the Style Police for being so sartorially clever.
Rodarte. 1. Witchery ‘Slouchy’ knit, $149.95. 2. Club Monaco ‘Julia’ skirt, $119.26.
J. Crew. 1. MIH Jeans ‘Chambray Safari’ shirt, £162.50. 2. Topshop ‘Stripe Full’ midi skirt, £42.00.
Marc by Marc Jacobs. 1. Forever 21 ‘Music Live Art’ tee, US$15.90. 2. Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Printed Cotton’ skirt, £88.75.
Which of these looks is doing it for you?
Do you own a chambray shirt? If not, you should. They’re awesome.
Are you a fan of the dressy skirt/casual top combo? Or maybe you prefer dressy top/casual pants? Please, do tell!

Loving the Marc Jacobs! And the topshop skirt is pretty good, but i’d have to wear it with heels every time.

I LOVE the Marc Jacobs runway and copy looks.
Wasn’t too keen on the J Crew runway look though, but totally adore the copy version with the stripey skirt.
Pretty! If only I wasn’t saving for travelling…
