Olympics 2012: And the Gold Beauty Medals Go to …

Thu, 9 August 2012 8:57AM

Beauty writers and editors could win medals for the sports of slathering and spritzing, so well trained are we at such techniques. Alas, the Beauty Olympics haven’t quite panned out. Luckily, however, products themselves compete valiantly for our attention, love and awards.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve hung bronze and silver medals around the perfumed necks of some kick-ass skin, hair and makeup products. But now, it’s time for the big – and gold – guns.

And the winners are …

Kat: Lanolips 101 Ointment, $17.95, from department stores and selected pharmacies
“I should at first say that one of my best friends makes this lip balm/all-round wonder balm, so yes, I’m a little biased. But that doesn’t explain why I’ve gone through dozens of the tubes so far (literally cleared them out – I’ve been known to cut the tubes open in order to get the every last skerrick) and why I feel bereft any time I realise I’ve forgotten to throw a 101 in my handbag for the day’s use. Why I love it: it’s simply good old-fashioned moisturising goo. My lips were chronically chapped until they met this love of their life. 101 not only hydrates but it works as a protective barrier, too, preventing moisture loss. It also gives a gorgeous plumped look to your pout. Oh and it can soften cuticles, calm scrapes and scratches, tame brows and add a glossy touch wherever needed. A multiple gold winner, in my eyes.”

Hayley: The Clarisonic Mia, $134, Adore Beauty
“My main skin gripe has always been congestion, so when my beauty therapist introduced me to the Mia it was love at first sight. This nifty gadget has become a staple in my skincare regime ever since, giving me deeper, more thorough cleanse than I would ever be able to get on my own. It works to clear all the gunk out of your pores, not only leaving your skin feeling (and looking) squeaky clean, but making it absorb your serums and moisturisers just that much better. I use it every morning and my skin is clearer and brighter for it. A gold medal gadget, that’s for sure.”

Yaz: Youngblood Luminous Crème Blush in Tropical Glow, Rose Quartz and Taffeta, $44, 1800 625 387

“Why? I’m all about glowing from the inside out, but sometimes you need a helping hand. This crème blush is super-easy to blend (let’s call it fool-proof) and these three colours are the perfect blend of peachy pink with just the right amount of shimmer. I rotate between these shades and, for a simple weekend look, I apply the colour to my cheeks, lips and eyes. LOVE!”

ECB: Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, $21.95, Myer and Priceline

“To warrant a gold medal, one has to strive to be better than the best; faster results, premium technique and all-round appeal. For me, the highest step on the beauty podium is reserved for this oil. It just doesn’t get much better than this. The feel is supreme, the radiance is immediate and the crowd just goes ape over my skin. (Or at least the crowd in my brain.)”

Emily: St Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse, $39.95, David Jones and Priceline

“As a fair-skinned gal, I simply never tan. Even if I could, I wouldn’t do it to my skin. Which has rendered me something of a self-tan-aholic. I’ve had every spray tan on the market, and used every DIY cream, lotion, gel and extender. But I always come back to St. Tropez. The mousse is super-easy to use, especially with the addition of an Applicator Mit ($10.95) and creates a light, believable colour that never looks out of place. The new formula has little to no smell, dries fast and looks natural, even right after you’ve applied. Genius.”

Love the RHO. I haven’t tried the fake tan. I finally got around to using my Lanolips the other day, it was the Lemonade one, OMG it’s amazing, so thick, protective and glossy.

I use 3 of the 5, and the 5th is fake tan and I never touch the stuff – so I reckon PRIMPED is rubbing off on me, in a good way!
