The Melbourne Beauty Look. Our Victorian Insider Reports.

So, who watched The Shire on Monday night and recoiled in horror from the, well, let’s say ‘baked-chook’ look of some of the show’s characters? Add the OTT touches of cosmetic surgery (when your lips touch your nose, they are absolutely too big!) and overly processed hair and you have yourself – in my opinion, anyway – a beauty disaster of epic proportions.

Don’t worry, Sydney, I don’t believe that this is an accurate representation of you. Not one bit.

To me, Sydney is all sun-kissed blonde hair, bright lips, pops of colour and designer labels. My beloved hometown of Melbourne, on the other hand, is brunette (for hair), black (for fashion) and a seamless blend of designer and bargain buys. To put this in Gossip Girl terms, Sydney is Serena and Melbourne is Blair. We’re polar opposites yet strangely competitive.

We can learn a lot from looking at the beauty styles of other cities (and anyone Primpettes out there from the other states, I’d love to know your particular tips), so if you’re interested in channeling Melbourne beauty style, walk this way …

GET THE MELBOURNE LOOK:

Hair: We may be a city seemingly dominated by brunettes but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate a blonde! Our only requirement is that you wear your hair on the longer side – we don’t seem to have embraced any style north of our collarbones – and you keep it well maintained. Melbourne girls love a polished look so be prepared to make like Kate Middleton and embrace the blow-dry.

Makeup: Keeping with its preference for the polished look, Melbournians tends to stay firmly away from ‘trends.’ If you want to blend in, keep lips looking natural with a swipe of nude lippy and skip the gloss. But don’t take that to mean that Melbourne girls are boring, because we know how to have a good time (we are, after all, the bar and pub capital), and when we do, we swipe on the red lips. Try: Revlon Colour Burst Lipstick in True Red, $20.95, from pharmacies, or M.A.C lipstick in Ruby Woo, $36, M.A.C.

Base: Embrace the skin you’re in, because multicultural Melbourne has it all. From Snow White skin to exotic darker complexions, Melbourne girls accentuate their natural beauty, freckles and all. Tinted moisturisers and BB creams have been welcomed with open arms by a city determined to avoid the fake look. Try: Face of Australia Tinted Moisturiser, $11.95, from pharmacies, and Hissyfit Saving Face Moisturising Tinted Sunscreen SPF30+, $55, from department stores.

Skin: Finally, if you really want to get the Melbourne look, you have to embrace a serious skincare regime. The city that experiences four seasons in one day plays havoc with a ladies’ skin, so lock in a great cleanser, gentle exfoliant, hydrating, moisturiser and sunscreen at a minimum. Try: Bloom’s fab skincare range, formulated to perfection by one of Melbourne’s most stylish and naturally beautiful women, Natalie Bloom …

So Primpers, what do you think of the Melbourne look?

And what is your city’s particular beauty style?

Oh, and let’s talk about The Shire, shall we …

This may shock you, but Sydney is multicultural and actually has brunettes too!

Of course it does, when I wrote this I was playing with the stereotypes that exist about Melbourne and Sydney – Sydney is more beachy, Melbourne more sophisticated. Sydney is adventurous, Melbourne is conservative. That kind of thing.

As a Melbourne girl these are my observations about the Melbourne beauty look – but by no means am I an expert. It’s just a bit of fun and I’d love to see a post about Sydney because I think Sydney really embrace fun beauty looks. :)

Love how this article highlights Melbourne’s sophistication! By the way, MELBOURNE IS BETTER THEN SYDNEY.

I should make it clear to all non-Sydneysiders – The Shire is not an accurate representation of how Sydney girls (or in fact, how a lot of actual Shire girls) look. Thank God!
