2012 Cannes Film Festival: Diane Kruger, 1 Day, 2 Amazing Hairstyles

Thu, 17 May 2012 11:16AM

The Cannes Film Festival or in French Le Festival International du Film de Canne (sounds so much more glamorous, don’t you think?) is one of the major celebrity drawcard events of the year, Primpettes, and a way for filmmakers to showcase their latest work to European audiences and the rest of the world. If you want to know the front-runners for the top gongs at Academy Awards next year, it usually premieres in Cannes. You heard it here first.

One of the main reasons I have such a soft spot for the annual French film festival, is because I know that Diane Kruger is guaranteed to make a cameo. In 2012 she’s serving as a member of the official film jury, which means we’re set for a string of red carpet appearances with an array of couture gowns and perfectly polished beauty looks. After all, who could forget her red-dress-red-pout-combo from last year? Not me.

But the best part about Cannes is the photo ops for both day and night – film photo-calls take place during the day, where the more casual beauty looks are present, before switching up to high-octane glamour at night.

And if we needed not one, but two different hair-spirations for this lovely Thursday morning, then they’ve come via Ms Diane Kruger herself:

Diane Kruger

With the French Riviera providing a glittering backdrop, DK undertook her first official jury duty (ha!) at a photo-call with her fellow members and it was understated elegance at its best. I love the soft loosely curled waves and, although I’m currently partial to dewy skin, her flawless matte complexion is event-appropriate. Since the temps are probably soaring, she’s gotta keep the shine factor to a minimum. I’m getting side-tracked. Back to hair. But I do love that nude lip, too, Diane.

A few pointers for creating loose waves like these:

  • I’m guessing she, or more likely her hairstylist, achieved the style by using a curling wand, like the H2D X3 Curling Wand, $264.99, H2D. This magical wand comes with three interchangeable heads depending on the width of curl you are looking to create, and works a treat equally as well on fine hair like mine, or those with thicker, luscious locks.
  • Working with clean or second-day hair, begin by sectioning your hair into your desired side part, on whichever side you normally part to. Grab wide sections of hair, and, holding the curling wand on an angle, wind your hair backwards around the wand at ear-height so that the curls fall away from your face. Continue to curl around your head, waiting to brush them out until the whole head is complete.
  • Then, gently add a spritz of lightweight hairspray to the mid-lengths as to not drag the hair down, like TONI&GUY Casual Flexible Hold Hairspray, $15.99, 1800 061 027, for added hold, smoothing any flyaways on the crown, too. Voilà! Gorgeous, no?

For the Opening Night dinner, she’s amped up the red carpet factor with this shell/fan-like updo. Here it is from the front:

And the back:

This kind of up do looks a lot harder than it actually is, Primpettes. The most important aspect of this style is to have the front section of your hair sporting a little texture and volume, while keeping the hair at the nape of your neck sleek, as to not detract from the main event, aka the bun. If it looks a little too fussy, you can just keep it as an oversized ballerina bun.

  • Quick tip: Best created on second day hair – you don’t want this to look sqeauky-clean and soft – begin by working a mousse through the roots for texture and volume, like Wella System Professional Elegant Shape Body Mousse, $33.50, 1300 885 002, before gathering it into a ponytail, save for a small section of hair to wrap at the end. Tease the hair using a bristle brush and add a spritz of hairspray for hold, and then smooth the hair into a fan shape and tuck it under the bun, wrapping the small section around the base and securing with a bobby pin.

So Primpettes, two new ‘dos to attempt for the weekend ahead. Got a favourite?

What do you think of Diane’s Cannes beauty looks?

Love what you see so far? Are you looking forward to seeing more from celebrities at Cannes?

The first one is stunning :) But i also like the second one, although it might look harsh on me. She seems to get away with it though.

I prefer the round ballerina bun instead of this fanned-out-bun which is really a ponytail pulled halfway on the last loop..

Oh wow, looks so simple her hair, but I’m sure it’s quite tricky.
