3 New Lust-Worthy Nail Polish Collections from MAC, Rimmel & NARS
Thu, 28 June 2012 5:02PM
Mark this Sunday in your diary, Primpettes, because come this Sunday, July 1, you, like me, are guaranteed to feel like all of your Christmas’ have come at once. That’s because not one, not two, but three new nail collections are hitting shelves, so I’ve taken the liberty of testing each of the new nail polishes (possibly one of my favourite aspects of my job) and giving you the lowdown on my favourite polish picks.
Without further ado …
MAC Cosmetics Permanent Nail Lacquer Collection
First up, let’s talk about MAC. I’ve always held a soft spot in my heart for the limited edition collections that include a polish or two. I mean, who could forget that spear-minty gorgeous green shade from last year’s Quite Cute Collection? Not me, that’s for sure. So you can imagine our utter delight to find that the cult makeup brand, renowned for their variety of bright ‘n’ bold makeup hues, are releasing the first ever permanent nail colour range. And not only do the new nail varnishes share the highly pigmented factor like its MAC’s makeup counterparts, they also have serious staying power, even on my oily nail beds. I got five days out of my Saint Germain mani.
The collection offers 31 shades in total, with either a cream, pearl or frost finish. You’ve got your traditional pinky nudes, beige, and milky shades, you know, those of the office-appropriate variety. But if you’re looking to dip your fingers into something a little more playful, Saint Germain is a gorgeous candy pink that applies like a dream and only needed one coat, or if you’re heart is set on an out-there orange, you must take Morange for a spin. There are deeper, more wintery shades too, but my top pick are the frost and pearl finishes, in particular Formidable. It’s a teal green with a pearlescent finish that is similar to Chanel’s Black Pearl. Oh, and Soirée, a glittering pale bronze that’s pure glamour in a bottle. Trust me, Primpettes, there’s a little something for everyone.
Price: $22 each, from MAC Cosmetics and David Jones
Rimmel 60 Seconds Nail Polish New Shades
I’ve long been a fan of these Rimmel nail polishes, first and foremost because of the Xpress Flat Brush is both wide AND flat. My fingernails are somewhat on the long side, it means when I paint a coat, the polish covers my entire nail, and stays true to the promise of one minute drying time. Rimmel have just released 14 new shades, with my pick of the bunch going to #605 Purple Reign, an eye-catching royal hue and #315 – Ready, Aim, Paint! No, wait. Don’t start painting yet – that’s its name! It’s actually the perfect cherry red shade.
Quick tip: If you find that a flat brush like this isn’t thick enough to coat your whole fingernail, remember that when painting your nails you can actually leave a tiny (and I mean a 2mm thick) space around the edges. This way you actually avoid any staining on your cuticles, particularly if you have a really deep, dark colour. It’s my foolproof trick.
Price: $6.95 each, from Priceline and supermarkets.
Thakoon for NARS Limited Edition Nail Collection
For those who love those two special words “limited edition” (two hands up here), then you will adore this latest offering from Thakoon for NARS, the first designer collab for the makeup brand. A NYFW regular, designer Thakoon, who dresses everybody from Sarah Jessica Parker to the First Lady Michelle Obama, was inspired for the collection by the bright pops of colour found in Indian spice markets. The six purely pigmented shades, including Anardana, a pop of pinky red, and Amchoor, a bright yellow (which looks beyond amazing on warmer skin tones), are both chip resistant and long-lasting. However I’m on Team Kutki, a gorgeous sky blue, which is just what you need to brighten up your dreary winter ensemble (more than likely made up entirely of black and grey). It’s on the sheer side, so give it two good coats.
Price: $32 each, from Mecca Cosmetica
