5 Nourishing Winter Haircare Buys, Plus WIN a Herbal Essences Winter Haircare Pack!
Fri, 15 June 2012 10:56AM
Let’s face it, this time of year brings about a case of the winter hair doldrums. Your hair is probably tied up in a low pony or top knot, (although bet your bottom dollar that they’re of the fashion-forward variety. Good one, Primpettes), but you wish that you could let your locks flow free without worrying about it’s current dry, lacklustre state.
In order to get us all out of our winter hair rut, I spoke to Joico’s Visionary Director Gianni Scumaci, in town to discuss the new Structure range (more on that soon). I drilled Gianni on caring for our hair in winter and his go-to product, plus I’ve also added a few of my favourites for braving the cold front, so you can pull off that beanie and step out with the most luscious, hydrated hair. Oh, and there’s also a winter haircare prize pack giveaway, but I’ll get to that soon. Promise.
Gianni says that winter can typically alter the texture of our hair and depending on the chilly weather outside and days spent rugged up next to the heater, it can also leave it feeling dry, so it’s important to use the right products to rehydrate. Along with using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner suited to your individual needs, Gianni recommends using a weekly reconstructive treatment, essential for keeping your hair hydrated and to repair any existing damage.

Joico K-PAK RevitaLuxe Bio Advanced Restorative Treatment, $28.95, 1300 764 437
Gianni refers to this baby as his go-to Joico product for high intensity nourishment. He says that it provides “immediate results” in strengthening your hair, leaving it feeling and looking both shinier and healthier. If you have coloured hair and experience fading, which is traditionally due to cold winter winds where ends can become dry and brittle, this product would be ideal, as it restores and maintains the lustre of your locks.
And here are a few of my other favourites …

Original & Mineral Seven Day Miracle, $31.95, 1300 724 635
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was introduced to this gem from the fabulous team over at Atlantis Hair, and now I can’t live without it. Infused with a nourishing blend of macadamia seed oil and certified organic argan oil, use it weekly as a treatment mask to restore shine and vitality to your locks, leaving them feeling silky smooth and soft. And in case you missed it, for a quick tip and an ultra-luxurious treatment, apply the mask and wrap your hair in a hot towel before rinsing off.

Pantene Pro-V Intensive Damage Repair Oil Treatment, $9.99, 1800 028 280
Oils have been used as a hair treatment for centuries, but it hasn’t been until recently that formulations became lighter as to not weigh the hair down, and ideal to use on fine hair too, without making it look and/or feel oily. Pantene’s first oil offering, the Intensive Damage Repair Oil, is a leave-in treatment designed to banish split ends and dry hair, as well as protect your strands from damage caused by heat styling and other environmental factors. I was hesitant to use it at first, because my hair is on the oily side, but I was quickly converted. My tip: For those with fine, or oily hair (or both, like me), use a small drop into the palm of your hand and spread over the mid-lengths and ends for a smooth, shiny finish.
Wella Pro Series Moisture Treatment, $10.99, 1800 028 280
Dry hair equals brittle and lacklustre strands. Wella’s new Pro Series Moisture Treatment is designed to get moisture right to the hair cuticle, smoothing the hair and leaving it tangle-free and super-shiny. You know that feeling when you apply a hair treatment and when you rinse it out, it feels silky-soft? That’s how my hair felt after using this, even after I had blow-dried it, leaving it frizz-free and sleek.

Clairol Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Treatment Mask, $5.99, from supermarkets
If you’re a fan of sweet-smelling hair treatments and Herbal Essences products in general, then this fruity berry number is for you. It works to nourish and protect each strand of hair with a silk and raspberry infused formula, to strengthen your hair while preventing breakage. Plus at $5.99, all you need to do is skip your morning banana bread and it’s yours.
And since we’re on the topic of Herbal Essences, we have 10 winter prize packs to give away to lucky PRIMPED readers! Each of the ranges are inspired by a tropical getaway, guaranteed to transport you to a warmer climate, fruity cocktail in hand. The prize packs are valued at $60 each, and are jam-packed with the following:
- Herbal Essences Shampoo and Conditioner
- The Tousle Me Softly Styling Range, with Tousle Me Softly Spray Gel, Tousle Me Softly Mousse and Tousle Me Softly Hairspray
- None of your Frizzness Serum
- Set Me Up Supersize Hairspray

Tell me, Primpettes, do you use a hair mask once a week?
If so, has it made a difference in your hair during the winter weather?
Do you have a favourite?

Having a young child doesn’t leave me much time for primping with my hair. Now that he is not so young this winter, with some great products i might be able to do something with it.

Posted by: Karen Carland // Fri, 15 June 2012 10:16pm
I previously had my hair bleached at the ends in summer to match the season. That was a very bad choice as the bleach processed / fried my hair, it became so outta control with constant knotting and tangles from the split ends. So I finally decided to give my hair the big CHOP… the hairdresser absolutely butchered my hair. Now the split ends have reappeared even though I abstained from using any heat to style my hair and I really need a good mask at the moment.
