Best of Beauty 2012: The Five New Beauty Faces of the Year
Wed, 5 December 2012 1:39PM
I don’t know about you, but I love the beauty old guard. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Gwen Stefani, Cameron Diaz … For me, they’re great role models for ageing with style. But – with all due respect – they’re not always the most exciting women, at least when it comes to hair and makeup. And I don’t blame them. Comes an age when you do start to settle into a look you know suits you. Especially, I imagine, if you know you’re going to be battling paparazzi, and their expose-every-pore lenses, all day every day. They don’t call it warpaint for nothing.
That’s why I also love to look for new beauty faces on the red carpet. Generally, the younger celebs are still finding their best looks, and so are more open to experimenting with beauty buys and trends. Which makes for much more inspiring viewing back here in the peanut gallery, don’t you think?
With that in mind, I thought I’d recap some of our year’s newest, most favourite beauty faces. They might well be the old guard one day – but for now, before they start looking a little seen-it-done-it-bought-the-t-shirt, we’re taking as much makeup and hair inspiration from them as we can.
1. Julianne Hough
Okay, the 24 year old is not so ‘new’. As a ballroom dancer she won America’s Dancing with the Stars twice, and as country singer, she has made number one on the Billboard Country Album charts. But she has only recently broken through into Hollywood and the mainstream. After starring in the Footloose remake a few years back, she partnered Tom Cruise in this year’s Rock of Ages. She was our One-to-Watch back in May. However, she didn’t really rock our beauty world until she cut her hair and shook her look up. Just some of the trends she’s successfully tried these past few months are the bob, the pompadour, oxblood lips and the top knot. Personally, my favourite look is the mermaid-esque water waves ‘do, from the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards:
2. Bella Heathcote
Amanda Fowler has come a long way from Ramsay Street. These days, ex-Neighbours star Bella seems to be on red carpets the world over. Her breakthrough came early in the year, appearing in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows. Since then her biggest role, at least in my mind, has been ‘Owner of the World’s Most Fabulous Fringe’. Her usual look: she sets off her signature blunt, heavy bangs with large doe eyes, fluttery lashes and a stained lip. Although she is just as talented at wearing lavish lipstick and slicked-back hair, so she’s a definite keep-an-eye-on for all beauty lovers.
3. Cara Delevingne
Voted the model of the year, she certainly was our face of the spring/summer 2013 collections, where she seemed to pop up on every single runway. But we have most loved Cara’s off-catwalk style. Her signature look: strong, statement brows, smoky eyes and a long mussed-up mane. Although she can do polished-chic perfectly, with the occasional red lip or super-chic chignon, like this stunner of a style:
4. Amber Heard
True, The Rum Diary actress has become best known for her bisexuality and alleged affair with Johnny Depp, but we’ve been fascinated to see her morph from a Marilyn Monroe-like red-lipstick-wearing blonde bombshell, to a sleek and chic brunette (albeit one with ombré ends).
5. Elle Fanning
She’s more known for her love of designer fashion, but Dakota’s little sister has been making a beauty statement, too. While the 14 year old tends to go for a tween-friendly fresh-faced look over a made-up one, she has championed this year’s yellow-blonde trend, as well as hair accessories such as sweet bands and flowers.
Tell me, Primpers, who have been your most inspiring beauty faces of 2012?
