Do or Don’t: Matching Nail Polish on Your Fingers and Toes?

Tue, 26 June 2012 12:30PM

I was trawling through recent red carpet pictures when I spotted this snap of Emma Stone. She’s my current girl crush, so as you can imagine I’m loving the fact that she’s out and about promoting The Amazing Spider-Man. And speaking of which, we have another amazeballs comp to tie in with the release on July 4th. But more on that later.

So Emma’s hair and makeup was particularly flawless on this occasion (the loose waves, pinned back fringe with bold lip is both understated and glamorous), but this time it was her hands and feet that did the talking.

Well, not literally, but you get my drift.

So if you look closely, Ms Stone here has opted for an orangey coral-red shade on her tootsies (we’re guessing it’s Revlon’s Coral Me Wild, $13.95, from pharmacies) and gone for perfectly polished – sorry, couldn’t help myself – espresso colour on her fingers.

So it got me to thinking, Primpettes, about how I wear nail polish. I generally like to switch up my shades quite often, as I find there’s nothing better than a coat of freshly applied polish on a dreary winter day like this one. The brighter the better. But when it comes to deciding to match or not to match, I’m stumped.

Karon McKendrick, Director of Education for OPI, says that it’s not a new trend to have the same shades on both. “Depending on your outfit and the occasion, having matching mani and pedi tones is considered more appropriate – rich burgundy, dark purples and blacks beg to be the same on both. But as a general rule, it is actually more flattering to have a darker colour tone on your toes and lighter on your fingers, even if it is a colour within the same palette.”

So in my case, if I decided to play by the rules, I would probably go for OPI We’ll Always Have Paris, $19.95, from department stores which is the perfect all-year-round nail shade as it’s a deep berry with more of a purple undertone, so it’s a little bit softer than a deep brown or black. Up top, I love fashion week favourite OPI’s Samoan Sands, which is a gorgeous creamy, bone colour and a winner on all skin tones. AND if you choose a nude shade on your toes or your talons, when it chips it’s less noticeable, so you can get an extra day or two out of your mani. Winner.

And speaking of nail polishes and Spider-Man, here’s the beyond awesome competition this week. We’ve teamed up with OPI to offer five lucky Primpettes a double pass to see the just-about-to-hit-screens The Amazing Spider-Man in 3D, valued at $40 and your very own OPI The Amazing Spider-Man Minis set, $24.95. The set includes Into The Night, a shimmering navy blue, Number One Nemesis, a rich charcoal with sparkling golden flecks, Just Spotted The Lizard, an iridescent gold and greens, and Your Web or Mine?, a bright cherry pinky-red.

Spider-Man_Minis

Gosh, I love their nail shade names. Cracks me up every time.

UPDATED: Competition is now closed. Watch those mail boxes.

Primpettes, tell me, do you have a favourite shade you wear on both?

Can’t wait to see the movie? Us too.

No, I like to mix it up and colour clash with different brights on each. It looks more individual

  • Posted by: Fleur Maxwell-Garrett // Tue, 26 June 2012 12:47pm

Always matching – you wear matching shoes and socks (unless you’re Helena Bonham-Carter!) so fingers and toes should be the same!

I never wear matching feet and hand nail colours, they are always different. Even the polish on my finger nails is usually different, Ill wear a nail foil or press on nail on my ring finger while the other nails will be painted a vibrant colour. I think miss matched nail colours are trendy and really make you stand out. As well as always drawing attention to your artwork and creating a conversation

  • Posted by: Razamataz Enthusiast // Tue, 26 June 2012 12:52pm

No, I always use a classic dark shade on my toes like opi Lincoln park after dark and change my nails to reflect my mood.

  • Posted by: melany Devotee // Tue, 26 June 2012 12:53pm

For fruity-coloured fun, I switch up nailpolish shades so I can go coral crazy on my hands, and have mesmerising magenta on my feet!

  • Posted by: catn2kittens Master Fan // Tue, 26 June 2012 01:03pm

I change my fingernails every few days, alternating between dark, pale and bright, in winter my poor toes are out of sight out of mind!

I don’t usually co-ordinate my colours, I find I get a bit bored if I have the same colour on both hands and feet and also the colours on my fingers never last as long.

  • Posted by: tereza Newbie // Tue, 26 June 2012 01:59pm

No. I love to wear darker colours on my toes & bright fun colours on my hands. Plus i love to change the colour on my hands more often.

Favourite toe colour at the moment is OPIs ‘Under the taupe’
and fave nail colour at the moment is OPI ‘Fly’.

Similar colours, yes, but never the same colour. It’s fun to mix things up and some colours look terrible on hands but amazing on feet.

  • Posted by: Cat Woods // Tue, 26 June 2012 02:25pm

No – there are just too many amazing colour combinations to rock from day to day!

  • Posted by: Melissa // Tue, 26 June 2012 02:57pm

No! I own over 400 bottles of nail polish so am always trying out different colour combinations. Need more fingers & toes he he!!

    I understands,
    different brush-strokes for different folks.
But when it comes to my hands,
they always match my feet – or I don’t hit the street.

  • Posted by: Virginia Mason // Tue, 26 June 2012 03:10pm

Wearing the same polish on my hands and feet,
    coordinates and looks neat.
Quicker to apply and saves time as well,
    matching looks just swell!

I love OPI Red, Quarter of a Cent-Cherry and Paris Purple – Lourve Me Lourve Me Not.

  • Posted by: Praisy // Tue, 26 June 2012 03:11pm

Sometimes, but most of the times they are different! I like my toes classic red or nude but my nails have a new shade every week! :)

There are too many great colours out there to wear coordinating nail polish! I love something bright on my toes, I love OPI’s a mandarin is hard to find and I can’t go past OPI’s Black onyx or barefoot in Barcelona on my fingers.

  • Posted by: carnella harvey // Tue, 26 June 2012 03:26pm

I started off with a matching nail and toe polish. I even liked coordinate my nails and toes to be coordinated with each other but different colors. I really enjoy the different options you have with nail polish. I love OPI and you cant lose when you work it!

  • Posted by: Alyse strilakos // Tue, 26 June 2012 03:53pm

  • Posted by: Scarlett nunns // Tue, 26 June 2012 05:37pm

As a general rule I like to wear different colours on my hands and feet. I think it gives a more edgy individual aesthetic. But for a formal event such as a wedding a nude pink on both hands and feet looks fabulous.
Fav colours: OPI- Lincolin park after dark, Mod about you

  • Posted by: michelle w // Tue, 26 June 2012 06:10pm

yes, so it completes the whole look and doesn’t look odd and incomplete. I love bright out there colours

  • Posted by: Inna Tucker // Tue, 26 June 2012 07:15pm

I usually wear matching nail polish on my hands and feet. Wearing different colours seem very odd as if you wear different shoes on your feet! Love the plum colours this winter!

often basic colour down and the colour with pizazz atop, such as Shattered, enhanced, or decorated.

  • Posted by: Kristina // Tue, 26 June 2012 08:12pm

No, mainly because it lasts forever on my toes and only a few days on my nails, so they get changed more often

  • Posted by: TERRER Enthusiast // Tue, 26 June 2012 08:16pm

I do if I have time as I think it just looks great when they are coordinated

  • Posted by: chrissy077 Supporter // Tue, 26 June 2012 08:40pm

Never because hands and feet are so far apart, never viewed together and feet need to stand out and benoticed, so they always get vivid nail polish.

  • Posted by: Madeleine // Tue, 26 June 2012 08:41pm

Yes. I wear lots of dresses and peep toe heels – i would look tacky if i had different colours on my fingers and feet!

  • Posted by: Lesleigh // Tue, 26 June 2012 08:55pm

I usually wear a much brighter shade on my toes because of my workplace liking natural shades on show.

  • Posted by: AmberB // Tue, 26 June 2012 09:04pm

I always go for a lighter shade on my fingers and a darker shade for my toes. I think mixing up colours is more fun.

Don’t use it on my toes, since no one really looks at them.

I love mixing it up for everyday unless its special occasion like a wedding I will match hands and feet.

There are some colours that do not go well on my hands but look fab on my toes and if I really love the colour I wear it on my feet and wear a lighter version or a clashing colour on hands.

Always wear coordinating nail polish on hands and feets because it always looks alot more smarter and neater.

  • Posted by: Laren Kimpton // Sat, 30 June 2012 01:20pm

Yes! Be creative, be fun, be YOU!

  • Posted by: Lizzy-1293582119 Supporter // Sat, 30 June 2012 03:25pm

Yes and No so I usually paint my nails like mini art works for fun. I love glitter and crackle and any other texture I can think of. Just have fun with your nails. Expression is life!

  • Posted by: Kim Campbell // Sat, 30 June 2012 04:00pm

I normally coordinate, I just think being uncordinated looks stupid, like you got ready in a hurry and couldn’t be botherd.

  • Posted by: lynne lillington // Sat, 30 June 2012 07:59pm

Yes always coordinated, but I paint my pinkie finger and small toe in gold or another colour.

  • Posted by: Alma Griffiths // Sat, 30 June 2012 08:12pm

Nope, never. I like to go really crazy on my toenails and leave my hands bare or nude

  • Posted by: Fiona Bottcher // Sat, 30 June 2012 09:39pm

Always in Summer- I don’t bother in Winter as nobody sees my toes. It’s a bit like wearing one earring – it’s not complete

  • Posted by: Sharon Cameron // Sat, 30 June 2012 10:19pm

I like to switch things up a bit, sometimes my mani/pedi is coordinating, sometimes it’s more random. Right now, I’m all about ombré.

  • Posted by: Laura Carey // Sat, 30 June 2012 10:55pm

Well, the colour coordinates, but it is not exactly matching as my preschooler loves painting my toenails (and most of my toes)!

  • Posted by: Tony L // Sun, 1 July 2012 01:35am

    No, because I’m a guy!

  • Posted by: Linda Vesinger // Sun, 1 July 2012 03:07am

I never match toes & fingers – I get bored with the whatevr hue is on my hands after a few days & I’m too lazy to change my toes very often

  • Posted by: Karen Dethomas // Sun, 1 July 2012 11:08am

Yes matching fingers and toes always help me ‘Nail’ my look!

  • Posted by: Marlene Clock // Sun, 1 July 2012 01:43pm

No. I co-ordinate my nail poilish to my moods. So if I’m angry I show my RED toes. If I am feeling happy, I uncover my YELLOW finger nails.

  • Posted by: Renee Annison // Sun, 1 July 2012 02:27pm

sometimes yes sometimes no,depends on if i have something special on. usually i love the bold out there colours with maybe a bit of glitter ( who says little girls get to have all the fun)

  • Posted by: Caroline Gunnulson // Sun, 1 July 2012 03:48pm

I like to add a little excitement to my life and also to my outfits too, matching toes and fingernails would be BORING!

  • Posted by: sarah m hurst // Sun, 1 July 2012 05:29pm

Black Toe polish! ALWAYS Every outfit i wear ALWAYS has black somewhere within it! SO SHEEK!

  • Posted by: Kelly Horne // Sun, 1 July 2012 08:16pm

Yes I do – its like the saying, “do the curtains match the drapes” lol I like to match

  • Posted by: Rachael // Sun, 1 July 2012 08:18pm

No. Because there is too many awesome colours to wear the same one at once. Celebrate is my favourite!

  • Posted by: Lucy Mather // Sun, 1 July 2012 08:34pm

For a formal occasion I do coordinate, but in everyday life I tend to do my fingernails more often and I change colours. A bronze is a favorite.

  • Posted by: Sue // Sun, 1 July 2012 09:38pm

Yes I do wear matching nail polish on both hand and feet as I think it should match and it looks more stylish.

  • Posted by: Emma-louise May // Mon, 2 July 2012 02:22am

Well actually i like to do both depending on the occasion, at work or something special it normal coordinating but when i out for fun i like to mix it up.

  • Posted by: Sonia Olden // Mon, 2 July 2012 02:43am

No, My feet are generally a neutral colour because I don’t do them as often.

  • Posted by: Samantha Clifton // Mon, 2 July 2012 09:06am

I can barely keep up with painting my finger nails, let alone trying to keep on top of my ‘arch’enemy – my ugly ‘web’bed feet.

  • Posted by: Nicole M // Mon, 2 July 2012 12:53pm

No way- I love an interesting feature on my hands and nude peach on my feet.

  • Posted by: karen Kitto // Mon, 2 July 2012 01:56pm

Yes because I get a pedi and mani so they get done together at the same time, plus I can’t do my right hand correctly.

  • Posted by: Aimee sharpe // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:16pm

I always always match, like my mum says the curtains have to match the carpet? Lol my mum always has a weird view on life but that’s why I love her!!

My fav is loreal speed dry in coral, love love IT!

  • Posted by: Vicky Wollen // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:28pm

No because my fingernails are better looking that my toenails so I wear jazzy patterns on my toes to draw the eye away!!

  • Posted by: Erika Collis // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:29pm

In the summer when wearing sandles, yes, But in the winter I like to wear different colours just for the fun of it

  • Posted by: Ruby Khan // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:46pm

Sometimes! Nail polish is a great accessory and should accent your outfit so whatever looks cute I go with it!

  • Posted by: Nicole Newton-Plater // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:48pm

No, because it is hard to wear the same colour everyday and nail polish should last for more than a day!

  • Posted by: Vicki F // Mon, 2 July 2012 03:50pm

In summer cordination is my norm, but not in winter where my toes don’t often venture out in Melbourne, for fear of frost bite!!!

  • Posted by: Shannon Le Lievre // Mon, 2 July 2012 05:05pm

I barely get enough time to do my hands let alone coordinate my feet too. Something to look forward to when my kids are bigger!

  • Posted by: Maree Daniels // Mon, 2 July 2012 05:23pm

Nooo, I’m a rebel. I like to be more flamboyant with my feet yet more conservative with my hands

  • Posted by: Karen // Mon, 2 July 2012 05:34pm

I’m such a colourful soul that I love all colours and different shades on my digits!

  • Posted by: Sonia El-Sheikh // Mon, 2 July 2012 05:54pm

Yes Because it looks more elegant :) unless i have french on my hands i wouldn’t have french on my toes.

  • Posted by: primpedfan Newbie // Mon, 2 July 2012 07:43pm

I like doing the unexpected such as having a French manicure on my hands which looks quite refined (and chips show up less) and then go crazy on my toes with purples, greens or blues in a metallic or iridescent finish and draw attention to the gorgeous sandals I’m wearing.

  • Posted by: Elizabeth Davey // Mon, 2 July 2012 08:07pm

never, being uncoordinated means I get to polish my digits in different and unique ways depending on my attitude or clothes

  • Posted by: Alicia Bardsley // Mon, 2 July 2012 09:36pm

I’d love to. But who has the time?

  • Posted by: Becky S // Mon, 2 July 2012 09:41pm

No i like to use different colours so each body part is treated as an individual!

  • Posted by: Coconal Master Fan // Mon, 2 July 2012 10:02pm

Different shades on hands and feet,
Not having them match isn’t a sin,
It’s a way to stand out,
    Oh, please let me win!

  • Posted by: natalie foster // Mon, 2 July 2012 10:33pm

I do because I will feel very of balanced if I don’t…

  • Posted by: Justin F // Mon, 2 July 2012 11:23pm

I don’t normally coordinate my nail polish – but mainly because i am a guy and would probably cop it if i did :-)

  • Posted by: Falon Downing // Tue, 3 July 2012 12:22am

No way! How square that would be!

  • Posted by: Tonya Walker // Tue, 3 July 2012 12:23am

Yes, I wear the same on both because I have OCD and everything to me has to match and be even as well :)

  • Posted by: Chloe // Tue, 3 July 2012 02:21am

I have to have clean nails for working in the kitchen so I really go to town on my toenails!

  • Posted by: Leah Sharma // Tue, 3 July 2012 09:42am

I would coordinate because I would find it impossible to coordinate uncoordinated colours to wear

  • Posted by: Lesley // Tue, 3 July 2012 10:41am

I hadn’t thought of doing that. I’ll definately have to try it!

  • Posted by: Alicia L // Tue, 3 July 2012 11:03am

No, as I work I keep a neutral tone on fingers… But it’s a party on my toes with bold bright colours!

  • Posted by: Kirsten // Tue, 3 July 2012 11:51am

I’m a tad OCD so it’s matching all the way for me! (Nothing to do with the fact I only own one colour of nailpolish)!

  • Posted by: Daniela Barbaro // Tue, 3 July 2012 12:24pm

I like to match, for special events I match but sometimes I just paint my toes

  • Posted by: JadeRose Master Fan // Tue, 3 July 2012 01:42pm

No, but I try OTT shades on toes before using on fingernails so I get used to the colour.

Rimmel Lycra “Powerhouse” is my fave!

  • Posted by: Cazzgirl28 Newbie // Tue, 3 July 2012 04:01pm

I coordinate my nail polish to my outfit and hands and feet have the same on. That way I look classy and not a clown!!

  • Posted by: Megan // Tue, 3 July 2012 04:14pm

Nope! There’s too many gorgeous shades to only showcase one colour!!

  • Posted by: Elaine Onekawa // Tue, 3 July 2012 04:59pm

No, I always like something lighter on my finger nails and a rich dark colour that’s sexy on my feet

  • Posted by: wendyspann Newbie // Tue, 3 July 2012 05:01pm

I never coordinate my nail polish on my hands and feet as I like a little variety in my life.

  • Posted by: Narelle Antonio // Tue, 3 July 2012 05:23pm

Not matching – tis the season for mixing prints and colours! Why match when you can draw attention to both legs and upper body!!

  • Posted by: Breanne // Tue, 3 July 2012 05:39pm

Noooo! Just because you have a red handbag doesn’t mean you have to coordinate with red shoes! Why should nail art be any different??

  • Posted by: Leah Staker // Tue, 3 July 2012 08:03pm

Usually different, Only match them for special occassions and if i’m wearing formal wear!

  • Posted by: Linda Steabben // Tue, 3 July 2012 08:24pm

Oh BUGGER, we’re meant to CO-ORDINATE???
    - I just KNEW I was doing something wrong!!!

I usually wear the same shade on my nails and feet. I love the dark shades of red

  • Posted by: Alicia // Tue, 3 July 2012 09:05pm

I’m typing this with toenail-coloured fingernails, but this is a rarity. Normally I wear different shades…Dark for my toes and lighter for my fingernails

  • Posted by: Tabatha // Tue, 3 July 2012 09:10pm

I don’t no,because by the time I have messed up my fingers ten times,I can’t be bothered doing my toes

  • Posted by: Lorraine Marando // Tue, 3 July 2012 09:20pm

God no, I love a light shade of pink/nude on fingers and a dark berry colour for my toes.

  • Posted by: Alison Hillier // Tue, 3 July 2012 11:35pm

My toes are always a bright shade. My fingernails are a lighter shade as they’re short so I don’t want too much attention to them.

  • Posted by: Anita Black // Wed, 4 July 2012 01:30am

No I do not, as usually I dont wear open shoes for the world to see my ugly toes anyway!

  • Posted by: Helen // Wed, 4 July 2012 02:27pm

Matching to tone in with the clothes I am wearing I like them to match

  • Posted by: Helen // Wed, 4 July 2012 02:28pm

I wear the same colour on my hands and feet like them to tone in with my clothes .

  • Posted by: p3charmed Master Fan // Wed, 4 July 2012 02:59pm

I don’t because being all matchy matchy is too nanna for me :P

  • Posted by: rohie Supporter // Wed, 4 July 2012 04:13pm

  • Posted by: Sophie Wang // Wed, 4 July 2012 04:22pm

I prefer a co-ordinated look. The overall impression is just more polished!

  • Posted by: Ashleigh Read // Wed, 4 July 2012 04:28pm

I always have summer orange toes! But my nails change every few days. Warm tootsies always and forever changing fingers!

  • Posted by: Diane Turner // Thu, 5 July 2012 11:51am

Definitely not, different shades are hot, stand out from the crowd, wear it loud and proud

  • Posted by: Anita T // Sat, 7 July 2012 01:34pm

The way I see it is – fingernails are a long way from toenails! Give them their own breathing space and personality!

NO, as i love to have two different ones so, that i can experiment more

  • Posted by: Bri Butel // Tue, 10 July 2012 01:25pm

I dont coordinate my nailpolish because i change my fingernails more often as they chip more. While my toes will last a month after a pedicure!

  • Posted by: brinsley Enthusiast // Wed, 11 July 2012 02:39pm

Yes I do, if it’s coloured, the only time I don’t is when I’m just wearing clear nail hardener on my fingers, then I still like my toes to look sexy with a colour on them!

  • Posted by: leighdee // Fri, 13 July 2012 04:09pm

Yes to a point, I like patterned finger nails, to suit my mood and my outfit and I use a single co-ordinating colour for my toes.

  • Posted by: Catrina Kelly // Fri, 13 July 2012 05:14pm

I was old school but if the shades can compliment like a sheer pink with a sheer pink with glitter flecks I will do hands different from feet. oh and the other exception: French fingers or toes can have a different other. Mostly french fingers with coloured toes.

  • Posted by: Lynette van Toor // Mon, 16 July 2012 05:03am

non-cordinating so my nails compliment both my shoes and outfit perfectly.

  • Posted by: Robyn Wilms // Mon, 16 July 2012 12:55pm

Absolutely, it adds class to your look, whether it’s french polish, colour or just natural it’s hot for any gal…

  • Posted by: Emily Wood // Wed, 18 July 2012 06:31pm

I normally wear different. I like my mani’s and pedi’s to be able to go with a range of different looks and find this is much less restricting in terms of clothing colours. Plus I like a bit of variation, so I’m less likley to get bored.

  • Posted by: Jessica Willebrands // Wed, 25 July 2012 04:51pm

I love to mix it up, sometimes it’s nice to match the colours, other times I like to be out there and be totally different and mismatched

  • Posted by: Jill-Anne // Fri, 27 July 2012 09:33am

Obsessively compulsive co-ordinator.. even pegs must match clothes colour on washing line so matching hands and feet …fait accompli with a smile!

Yes, I like everything to match and look consistent, just like with my outfit/clothes.

  • Posted by: Kirsty Inglis // Sun, 5 August 2012 04:37pm

Not often. I like to experonment on my toes, in case i mess up. Normally i’d have a colour on my fingers and gallexy pattern on my toes or something.

  • Posted by: pelligate Supporter // Thu, 6 September 2012 10:32am

No – because my my toes knows that dark is better and my fingers says go light!

  • Posted by: brinsley Enthusiast // Fri, 14 September 2012 01:13pm

My toes are always painted (and often quite brightly) but very rarely match my nails … I tend to keep my nails much more classic with either a french polish or clear enamel or a nice soft beige that just goes with everything. My toes are usually much more “wild” and “funky” I love my feet to look lively!
