Hilary Duff takes an epic hair risk; I don’t know if I like it.

A few weeks back, the ultimate burner, Kate Bosworth, nicked Proenza Schouler’s S/S ‘11 look, taking it straight from the runway into real life. And she pulled it off, Primps, with grace and style and utter beauty. But don’t be mistaken, this is not an easy feat. Runway looks are generally just that – meant for the runway. Yes, we can take bits and bobs from the looks and recreate them in a real life manner, but as a whole, they often are just a little too loony for the office or local supermarket.
And now The Duffsta has nabbed a runway look, too:

Hilary Duff attending the 10th anniversary Lucky Shops VIP Night in NYC on November 4th.
But can you guess which one? Can you, can you, can you? It’s Chanel’s A/W ’10 look. (You did guess that, right? Good. You’re such an educated Primp.)
You need proof that I’m not lying though, right? Then check this out:

Now, Hil’s ‘do is a little more messy, a little more naturally curly in the texture department, but it’s still ridiculously similar to this runway work of art Chanel cranked out earlier this year. Some would say that Hilary is a smart little trendsetter by cranking out this faux bob ‘do and I definitely give her props for being brave and taking a risk, but I still can’t decide if I like it or not.
Sure, it highlights her pretty face, shows off her amazing makeup (would you looks at those perfectly rosy cheeks and lips and her divine smoky eye with winged-out shadow) and demonstrates that she has awesome, does-what-it’s-told hair, but I can’t help but feel it looks a little lion-esque. And that maybe, just maybe, it’s a little ageing on her. It’s almost as though adding all that grit and texture leaves the ‘do looking a little more mumsie, and not ultra-cool like the delicately wispy, straighter-stranded Chanel version does.
Do you see that, too? Or are you shaking your head at a really fast pace in disagreement? I just see Hilary as this young girlie chick, the one who looks ace with a braided top knot, but also manages to rock a rather edgy textured balayage ‘do and still look beautiful. But this ‘do, well, it shows off an upmarket Hilary, a more mature version of the former teen sweetheart, and I just prefer her when she’s looking relaxed and cheeky and bubbly. Make sense?
But if you do like this ‘do – so much so that you wish to rock it, too – may I suggest applying a decent amount of mousse to your hair before drying it off. Once your locks are dry, spritz on some texturising product for extra grit and texture. Then, section off a 3cm deep section from ear to ear and pull it forward so it’s out of the way. Next up, tease the rest of your hair in sections until it is MASSIVE. You can then gently sweep the non-teased front section back over the huge hive you just created. Finish the faux lob by grabbing a few bobby pins and loosely pinning your hair into a loose bun at the nape of the neck. A spritz of hardcore hairspray like this Cedel Extra Firm Hairspray, $5.39…

…and your ‘do will be set for centuries. Or at least until the end of the day. Which ever you prefer, really.
So, pretty Primps…
Do you like Hilary’s ‘do? I think I prefer this poufy one on her.
Do you think it looks like the Chanel one, too?
Is this a look you would wear? I’m guessing no, but hey, don’t beat a girl down for trying to make conversion, OK?

I actually quite like the concept here but I think the real life vs. runway distinction requires a tad less volume.

She looks like a nanna crossed with a lion. It’s def not for me.

Makeup is gorgeous, but the hair is unfortunately both matronly and aging!

Thank you for the instructions but I’m a bit confused about “drenching your locks with loads of mousse before drying them off and spritzing on a shitload of texturising product”. Does that apply for ALL of the hair? Won’t it be crazily weighted down by all that product??

loopylexy, I’ve changed the wording so it’s a little bit clearer, but using a fair amount of mousse is key in this style. If your hair is too clean and almost product-free, you won’t get the height and the texture required to make a ‘do like this stay put. I hope that helps. Cx

it looks very glamorous, but yeah i agree paulaw, if it were to be worn in real life, it shouldn’t be as big.. but looking at hilary and how she pulled it off, she looks awesome!

I don’t rate this look at all. It is identical to the Chanel runway look and i think it’s definitely one that should stay on the runway. I have done this look before… its called having my hair tied up in a bun and having a restless sleep only to wake up the next morning with a big poof of hair, maybe ill start wearing it out and claiming Chanel. (probably, definitely wont be doing that)

Her hair does look a bit like the Chanel doo. Not a look for me but she doesn’t look too bad with it.

I have an engagement in 2 weeks – I am so practising this look to wear there! The straight Chanel one, not the curls!

She’s looking so much better with her latest style and darker colour. Good for her for trying something different here, but it’s not a great look.
