Jennifer Lopez. The Original Glow Bug (and Celebrity Scent)

Ten years ago, Jennifer Lopez, then known as J.Lo (remember that funny little P.Diddy phase?), and also known as a triple-threat (She can act! She can sing! She can dance!), added another slash to her sparkly Versace belt: perfume brand.
Glow by J.Lo, from $45, from department stores, could not have been more perfectly named. I mean, can you think of a star more luminous than this one (without the use of an illuminator, that is)? If you could bottle J.Lo’s lustrous skin, you would, right? This is her from her most recent Melbourne concert, at the age of 43:
As my three year old would say, “Wowee, Mama!”
And this was the original ad:
I don’t know about you, but I could quite possibly sell my soul for that skin.
Just as the lady evidently knows a great skincare tip or two, so too does she knows how to make a good perfume. Well, how to direct a good one. Because since 2012, Jennifer has worked with Coty Lancaster to concoct a whole slew of scents. The latest is Glowing. You might remember Yaz reviewed it here. Here’s the visual:
And yes, the bottle really does light up!
But while La Lopez is all about the new right now – songs, boyfriend, fragrance – I’ve found myself getting a little nostalgic for her old ‘I’m Real’ days.
Remember this? So gorge.
And nostalgic, too, for her original Glow.
You see, you might think it’s just another celebrity fragrance. Because there are so many perfumes out there stamped with famous names these days. But Jennifer was pretty much the first star to launch a scent (except for the divine Elizabeth Taylor, RIP). And a really successful one, at that.
That’s because, I think, it really was meant to capture J.Lo’s essence. It wasn’t just J.Lo plonking her name on any old bottle, as some stars are wont to do. It was J.Lo in a bottle.
Bear with me here while I explain … Years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Catherine Walsh, Coty Lancaster’s Senior Vice President, who established the celebrity scent division (and has also signed up Sarah Jessica Parker, Lady Gaga, Madonna – in other words, this lady is pretty good at her job). She told me how she flew to Europe – where J.Lo was on tour – for a preliminary brainstorm about the fragrance. Having been ushered up into Jennifer’s hotel suite, she waited while the star showered. Eventually the diva came out, robed in fluffy white, her skin warm and buffed and shiny. “I want my perfume to smell just like this,” she told Ms Walsh, holding out her arm for the Coty perfume guru to sniff.
And so, Glow by J.Lo was born. And indeed, it does have the fancy hotel soap aroma to it. In a good way. It’s technically a soft floral, but there’s a definite soapiness to it, along with powderiness and muskiness.
It’s sexy, yet also clean. Not an in-your-face, drop-dead-glamazon of a scent at all. It’s her Jenny from the Perfume Block, perhaps.
As for Glowing, this one’s a sexy, woodsy scent. Much stronger than Glow. And more the diva that J.Lo has become, you could say.
