Kim Kardashian and the Tricky Issue of Pregnancy Makeup
Wed, 16 January 2013 12:39PM
No matter how many people tell you that you’re glowing, when you’re pregnant, especially when you’re in your first trimester, you usually just feel fat and frumpy. And often like you want to throw up.
That’s when you pull out all the beauty and accessory stops needed to drag attention away from your fast-filling-out figure, and make you look a little more chic than you feel. And also, you kind of hope that when you’re wearing some fabulous neck bling or lip colour, it will somehow magically halt the urge to heave. Vomit splashes on a silk scarf are not so chic, really.
It’s a good theory, That doesn’t always translate to reality. And anyway, the mess does kind of help prepare you for the arrival of bubba, who will most likely think it’s hilarious to project milk onto every single outfit you own. Until you end up exclusively wearing yellowy-cream shades of Bonds lounge wear. But I digress.
I’m figuring that Kim Kardashian is feeling less than glamorous in her current state of pregnancy. Here she is, spotted in New York last night:
Sure, she looks glamorous. But I’m not sold that she feels it, because if you peer closely, you can see that she’s trying extra-hard to look so. And that’s a lot of hard. Because Kim wouldn’t even go out for Starbucks less than picture-perfect, with killer cheek contouring, sky-high lash extensions, and layers of her favourite gloss, the milky-pinky-nude Nars Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight, $39, Mecca Cosmetica
But here? She’s used a matte bronzer to not only contour and sharpen up her cheekbones, but also to add colour to her cheeks; her lashes are what can only be described as on-steroids (how’s that lower lashline? It looks like it has grown a hundred insect legs and is about to crawl right off her face); and then there’s that in-your-face red lipstick, a sure sign that someone might be needing a little assistance in the pick-me-up department. Especially when it’s a bright orange-red lippie like this one (which could possibly be YSL Rouge Pur Couture in #13 Le Orange, $50, department stores, sister Kourtney’s signature red).
When I was with child, I went crazy with the red lipstick. It made me look the opposite of what I felt, which was pasty and queasy. I also probably over-killed on the bronzer (because you tend to not want to faux-tan when you’re pregnant, a time when you’re hyper-sensitive about applying unnecessary ingredients to your skin). And while my eyes didn’t morph into strange hairy-legged critters, I was known to work the liquid eyeliner a little more than usual (in a deluded attempt to channel a pregnant Nicole Richie).
True, pregnancy makeup can be a little party-up-top-boring-down-below – because while your face is desperately trying to look like its old glamorous self, you end up waddling around in stretchy dresses that really do few favours, other than make bubba more comfortable. But thing is, you have a hunch that, come the forty-week mark, you’re going to lose yourself in a world where having lots of me-time – and makeup-time – becomes a fond but so-very-distant memory. So you might as well get your bronzer, lash and lippie fix while you can.
Tell me, mumma-to-be or mumma Primpers – what are your top pregnancy makeup tips?

Kim looks uncomfortable… My top tip for wearing makeup whilst pregnant is not to stray too far from what you would normally wear!

Her expression looks very much like she is sick. Poor Kim having to still look her best.

Unfortunately not a mumma, so have no special tricks. Would love to hear some though, for hopefully a future bub time.

One thing I keep wondering, which is somewhat related, is, do you have to change your make-up whilst pregnant? To make sure none of the nasties in it make their way into your system? Or is that just being too pedantic ?

Keeping it simple!!! Lipgloss or balm that can be reapplied often! Her lower eyelashes are reallly overdone. Poor girl though!

Hi loopylexy. Good question! Short answer: not much. Long answer: I’ll post something in greater detail on this topic in the next couple of weeks. Kat x

I’m not a mumma (or a mumma-to-be just yet!) but I think KimK looks beautiful. While I’m sure she loves the limelight, there’s got to be times she feels vulenerable- and this is probably one of those times. Her bottom lashes creep me out, but besides that, she’s obviously doing her best to pull it together when her expression says she’d rather be at home on the couch!

Illuminate – I didn’t glow at all but actually looked pale and ghastly throughout my pregnancy.

More illuminating under eye concealer – iron deficiencies definitely bring shadows where shadows never lived. Neck bling also helped me feel like attention wasn’t all on my belly plus good way to defrump a maternity dress. Also working all that extra hair thickness, I embraced my natural hair texture more while it felt fuller.
Kimye needs to trim those extensions- looking seriously ratty.

Kim looks to me to be nauseous? I recommend sunscreen as a mandatory product. Also, stay away from heavily scented products – you may find your favourite rose scented blush sends you heaving to the bathroom. Also, waterproof mascara – if you get struck with morning sickness and a quick run to the bathroom, it will save you from a mascara streaked face when you return to your desk

Regardless she is just always wearing too much makeup.
I’ve always had issues with my skin breaking out, but being pregnant, im lucky that my skin has gotten so much nicer that I need less makeup – fingers crossed it will stay that way!
