Kristen, Heidi and Selena Show Us Why We Should Rethink Blue Eye Makeup

When it comes to red carpet beauty, we’ve all learnt over the years that any look goes. At this week’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, we spotted everything from the crazy (multi-tonal high ponytails – yes, we’re talking to you Katy Perry) to the classic (think the traditional bold, high-shine lip à la Taylor Swift). But as always, there’s one look that stands out from the crowd as the one we’re suddenly desperate to emulate. Cue the blue-hued beauties Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez and Heidi Klum:
First up, let’s look at teen queen Selena Gomez …
The gorgeous Miss Gomez opted for a richly pigmented metallic blue eyeshadow, with a wash of colour over the lid and rimming the lower lash line. Traditionally you should wear shades opposite to your eye colour, and this pocket-rocket clearly plays by the rules – note how this colour really makes her irises pop.
K-Stew went down a similar route, but worked a smoky, frostier variation, blended with soft neutral shades up to the brow bone. Voilà:
And, last but not least, the lady with the volume Heidi Klum kept her lids bare, bar for a subtle, shimmering swipe of deep blue across her upper and lower lash line:
By the way, blue eye makeup also made an appearance on the A/W ’12 catwalks, with high-impact metallic looks seen at the likes of Prabal Gurung and Akris. Although the bright washes of azure might seem a little daunting, these three celebs have showed how the colour is easily transferred from runway to reality.
Allow me to give you some how-to tips …
- If you’re going for statement making look, try MAC Pigment in Corn Flower $39, MAC Australia. For easy application, use an angled brush and empty a tiny amount onto a small surface. Tap any excess off your brush, and begin by gently pressing the brush against your eyelid beginning in the inner corner and working outwards to avoid any spillage – trust me, from experience, they can get messy!
- For a wet look variation, choose a thinner angled eyeliner brush, and wet it before applying the pigment along your lash line.
- If using pigment seems a little scary, try Nars Eyeshadow in Tropic $45, Mecca Cosmetica, which is still high in pigment but underscored with sparkling silver undertones. Another option is MAC’s Extra Dimension Eyeshadow in Lunar, $50 – I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet, but I love the deep royal blue shade and metallic particles. Begin by prepping your eyes with a little primer – Revlon PhotoReady Eye Primer + Brightener, $24.95, from pharmacies, is a winner – before sweeping across your lid, and, if required, along your lower lash line.
- You’ll notice that Selena, Kristen and Heidi also chose to wisely keep the rest of their makeup simple yet polished and pretty, as to not detract from their eye makeup. Choose a soft pinky-toned blush and team it with a natural lip colour or tint. I love Becca’s Sheer Tint Lip Colour in Vendela, $48, Becca Australia, for that perfect creamy rose.
What do you think Primpettes? Will you be whipping out a blue eyeshadow for your next night out?
Or do you think it’s one trend best left back in the ‘80s?
