At this week’s SAG Awards, a Chanel lipstick was a must-have red carpet accessory …
Naomi Watts played the part of Hollywood screen siren, switching up a classic red for hot pink, wearing Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Colour in La Sensuelle, $50.
January Jones, complete with a pompadour-like coiff, wore Chanel Rouge Allure Lip Colour in Incandenscente, $50, a fire engine orange-red hue.
Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery wore Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Colour in L’Exquise, $50, dabbed on to achieve a stain-like effect.
Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Créme Lipstick in Taffeta Rose, $50, a classic rosy red shade was the order of the day for Anne Hathaway.
It’s quite the chic accessory to slip into your clutch, wouldn’t you say?
It evokes a certain sense of glamour. The streamlined black tube, the sleek ‘one-click’ gold case, and the iconic interlocking CC on the base. The lipstick itself, made up of the perfectly shaped bullet with Chanel stamped into its cylinder, and – most importantly – many a finely tuned formula designed to create a flawless lip finish.
Mademoiselle Chanel would be oh-so-proud of the prominent lip looks of late, after years of minimalist, natural and nude lip hues dominating the runway and red carpet. Because you see, when Mlle began designing and creating her lipsticks back in 1924, she had a penchant for dark and rich red lipstick, which set off her dark hair. And for a fun fact, those one click cases were one of her original designs. Très clever, Coco. Years later, the Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick in Gabrielle, $50, a bold red, long-wearing lipstick with a glossy sheen, was created in her honour. Think of it as a modern take on the classic cream lip colours she dreamed up so many years ago.
In recent times, Chanel lipsticks have become just as much of a cult item, as say, the brand’s legendary 2.55 bag. For a fraction of the cost and a way to carry a tiny piece of designer with you at all times.
It’s Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick, $19, from pharmacies, which now comes in six new shades. Drawing inspiration from colourful lip looks seen on the catwalk, the rich and blindingly bright hues include everything from a creamy peach to neon pink and, my personal favourite, Rouge Buzz, described as a ‘popping orange red.’ What I love most is its almost neon-like quality, perfect for a night out on the town, but equally as pretty and polished for a day in the office. It has quite a smooth, velvety texture, and settles to a creamy matte finish. As for wear time, I got around four hours before I needed a touch up. Not bad at all.
Tell me, Primpers, have you invested in a Chanel lipstick?
If so, which is your favourite?
Do you like the sound of the new shades from Bourjois?
