Makeup Lessons from Kate Middleton: If It Ain’t Broke …
Tue, 17 July 2012 2:21PM
When it comes to beauty, we all have a particular style or set products that could be classified as our signature, or our go-to. For everyday wear it might be a tinted moisturizer or BB cream, mascara and gloss, while for nights out you turn to winged eyeliner or slick of punchy pink lipstick. But it begs this question: if you were photographed everywhere from doing your groceries to red carpet events, then spotted pictures of yourself both online and on magazine covers, would you continue to stick with the same style, or would you try to switch it up?

Of course, the prime example of this is Kate Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge is renowned for her signature beauty look, comprised of a glossy, bouncy blow-dry, touch of pick blush swirled on her cheeks, black eyeliner and nude lip. Ok, so she occasionally tries an updo, or adds a fascinator. But that’s pretty much the extent of her beauty repertoire.
Recently The Daily Mail ran an article on this very topic, and uploaded images of Kate into Marks and Spencer’s new virtual makeover site, applying an array of out-there makeup looks to shake things up a little.
I have to say, it wasn’t at all flattering. In one example, garish emerald green eyeshadow was smeared up and over her brow bone, her eyes heavily rimmed in kohl teamed with a high-shine red lipstick. Another with thick pink blush. You get the picture. And after seeing Kate with all of these different makeover options, moi, who used to want to head over to ‘Ol Blighty and make over Kate myself, was all for her sticking with her signature.
But then I had an epiphany. A revelation, if you will. Maybe Kate is the one that has it right. I mean, what we might refer to as her beauty rut, is actually somebody, in this case Kate, knowing what works for them, and sticking to it.
And technically there’s nothing wrong with Kate’s style or rut per se, said to cost over $37,000 a year to maintain. She plays it safe, opting to keep it clean and classic, much like her dress sense. I mean, I’ll admit, there have been a few moments where she’s gone all heavy-handed with the eyeliner, which as you know can tend to close up the eye area, making you look a little squinty. But all in all I think she’s doing a stellar job. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
And speaking of, there are also a few other celebrities who rarely stray from their signature beauty look.
Like Gwen Stefani here, who dead-set never leaves the house without red lipstick …

And Kate Hudson, whose name is synonymous with boho-beach beauty …

What about you, Primpettes? What’s your signature beauty look, if you have one that is?
What do you think of Kate Middleton’s style? Should she stick with it, or switch it up?
Have you ever had a play with a virtual makeover tool?

Duchess Kate always looks lovely because she has natural beauty. I think that she would look good in any style.

I think Kate always looks polished. I’m a bit of a nude lip girl too.

I like how Gwen has her signature look, but also does change it up sometimes. You need to sometimes try something new. Otherwise you miss out on so many great products and looks.

Kate always looks good, but I think sometimes she’s a little heavy with the eyeliner. The look definitely works for her though.

So true! I’m sure these ladies know how to mix it up and also look great at the same time.
