Meet Jodie Boland. AKA ck One’s International Makeup Artist

Back in the day, when I starred in my own version of The Devil Wears Prada, as an eager little beaver trying to clamber up the magazine ladder, I used to hear the name Jodie Boland a lot: she was the makeup artist all the fashion editors wanted to book for their shoots. Before I got into beauty writing and got the chance to meet her, however, she had moved to New York. The town where, if you make it, you make it big time. And talk about big time: ‘our’ Jodie is now a global ambassador for Calvin Klein’s new cosmetics range, ck One. Surely one of the plummiest gigs in the Big Apple.

So I finally got to meet Ms Boland yesterday, at the official Australian launch of ck One Color (which has been in selected Myer stores, and online at Myer for a few months now). Here she is, doing her thing:

And if you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of a beauty interview, well, you are now …

PRIMPED: What’s your favourite product in the range?

JB: The 3 in 1 Face Make Up ($55). It’s like a tinted moisturiser with a primer and skin treatment. Oh, and SPF8.

PRIMPED: So it’s kind of like a BB Cream …?

Well it’s more a foundation with benefits. It gives a really natural finish but you can easily build it where needed.

PRIMPED: Any other must-buys?

JB: The Mascara ($30). It’s genius! It’s a two in one. You apply one coat to define and lengthen leashes. Then you twist the cap and what this does is move the bristles into a diagonal formation, which gives you more product to play with and allows you to volumise your lashes.

 

PRIMPED: That’s pretty cool …

JB: I know! It’s a great day-to-night product.

PRIMPED. Love a multi-tasking product … are there any other clever numbers in the range?

JB: The Color + Treat Lip Kit ($60) is great. It has a lip scrub, plumper, balm, lipstick and lip gloss. It’s amazing.

PRIMPED: Speaking of lips, the shades in the Pure Color Lipstick ($35) range are pretty gorgeous.

JB: Aren’t they? I love Bite Me, a fabulous fiery red. And Wow (pictured), which is a hot pink and a look that everyone in New York is wearing right now.

PRIMPED: So it’s all about brights for summer 2012?

JB: In a big way.

PRIMPED: What are your thoughts on coloured mascara? I know you have an electric blue in the range …

JB: Blue mascara is definitely back. My best tip on how to wear it well is to layer it over one coat of black mascara. It actually makes the colour more vibrant.

PRIMPED: For our lovely Primpettes who may not be ready to face blue mascara just yet, what’s a good look to wear this winter?

JB: Smoky eyes, but a colourful version. Say, purple or navy blue. Simply do your regular smoky eye, then go back in with a bright eyeshadow to give it a twist.

PRIMPED: So, in other words, there’s no escaping the colour trend …

JB: Well there is a flipside because the nude face also looks great and it’s a quintessential Calvin Klein look, too.

PRIMPED: For those of us who aren’t Calvin Klein models, how can we wear the nude look?

JB: Contouring is really great. Get to know your face and your features and what you can do to enhance them. Just be aware that contouring right now is about subtlety. Work with a colour only two shades darker than your natural skin tone. You can also grab the Skin Illuminator ($35) and dab it along cheekbones and down the nose to add highlights. It’s all about tone on tone.

PRIMPED: And good skin …

JB: Healthy skin is so important anyway. Cleansing skin is a must. I also use a water spray all day long. Under moisturiser, to set makeup, to generally refresh the face.

PRIMPED: New York women practically have their dermatologists on speed dial. What grooming rituals do you recommend?

JB: A facial is great, of course, even if you can only afford one every three months. Brow work, too. A well shaped set of brows really frames the face. And I also love going to day spas. New York is full of spas.

PRIMPED: Speaking of New York, that brings me to my final question … what are your favourite places in the Big Apple?

JB: So many … Ruby’s and Gitane are great cafes. As for restaurants, Balthazar and Indochine are classics. I also love a shop at Barney’s followed by lunch upstairs at Fred’s. And at night, I often go to Soho House, which is great for celebrity spotting.

PRIMPED: Sigh …
