Suddenly Everywhere: Grown-up Hair Accessories

Thu, 14 June 2012 4:25PM

Until recently, I was never big on hair accessories. I only had to look at a headband and I’d get a headache but it seems everywhere you look right now, designers and stylists are on a mission to bring all-matter of hair accessories, from hair pins, to clips, bands and crowns back. And I’m not talking Brenda-from-90210-fabric-styled headbands. Think serious glamour, pretty crystals, gold piping, pearls and  jewels and you get the pretty picture.

Need proof?

Enter our favourite model-of-the-moment, Bianca Balti with her fit-for a queen-looking crown as seen at the Dolce & Gabbana show…

Followed by Ginnifer Goodwin with her luxe halo-like rose-stem-looking golden head piece…

Before checking out Kirsten Dunst’s butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-your-mouth, too-sweet for words floral number.

Now, what about the makeup that goes with it?

Although technically speaking there are no rules, as a general guide we like to say the more elaborate the hairpiece, the softer your makeup. You can follow Kirsten and Bianca’s lead by opting for a soft rose pink lip and cheek tint that’ll add just the right amount of definition and texture, without competing with the richness of the crown. In terms of what to do with your hair, your options really are endless. The minimal makeup factor means you can go to town creating a soft, wispy up ‘do with plenty of volume and texture, or you could opt for a sleek style, incorporating a neat centre part, like Bianca’s, which will help to balance the face and anchor the crown.

Keen to get a little crafty?

While Sportsgirl and Diva have the trend in the bag, personally I worship at the alter of DIY and it’s for this very reason that I suggest you try your hand at creating your very own hair accessory. If you’re new to hot glue-guns and glitter, you can ease yourself into the art of craft starting with this little tutorial courtesy of my favourite DIY blog, P.S.- I made this is…

Just image how pretty this would look using ribbon in muted tones like bronze, gold and peach…

What do you think?

Are you ready to dress up your ‘do?

Are you a fan of DIY?  Seen any other crafty headband how-to’s that we need to know about?

Kirsten Dunst is looking fantastic at the moment! I really like the headband she’s wearing!

I always tend to feel a bit like a kid wearing headbands, but they’re so cute!

Yes! I love grown-up hair accessories. I’m a little naughty and steal my daughter’s beautiful hair accessories sometimes. She’s got lovely ones.

Not quite sure that’s for me, even though I do have long hair…..feel a little too old to be wearing that!

Oh wow, that is just amazing! Must give that a go, I have several ribbons lying around, and an an elastic hair tie which is too loose.

I occasionally love a good hair accessory, im a sucker for a pretty clip/headband, they can be wonders for hiding a bad/boring hair day :)

Bianca Balti looks amazing, but I’m not as keen on the other looks.
