The Beauty Experts: Makeup Artists, Editors and Hairstylists You Need to Follow on Twitter

Wed, 11 July 2012 11:20AM

In the nineties and early noughties it was all about MySpace. And then it moved to Facebook, with give or take a few hundred varieties of social networks in between. Today, it’s all about Twitter and Instagram (or both), and aside from catching up on the latest news and celebrity snaps, here at PRIMPED HQ we love following the who’s-who in beauty to get the latest news, trends and looks pretty much as soon as they happen.

While we’re currently keeping an eye on 540 peeps on Twitter (to be exact), here are ten of our must-follow beauty favourites, along with the lowdown on who they are, what they do and why – if you haven’t already – you should add them to your Twitter feed. Like now.

Without further ado…

Who: Pat McGrath
Twitter: @patmcgrathreal
What: I probably don’t need to explain who Pat McGrath is to all of you beauty enthusiasts out there, but just in case, she is the go-to makeup artist for runway and editorial. From the catwalks of Oscar De La Renta to Dior and Valentino and countless magazine covers, Pat’s done it all, along with being the Creative Design Director of Procter & Gamble Beauty, working on brands like CoverGirl, Dolce & Gabbana and Max Factor. Her twitter feed is full of runway hints and tips, as well as backstage and on-set snaps with the likes of Coco Rocha and Karlie Kloss.
Top Tweet: #BeautyFlash‬!! After applying false lashes with black lash glue, draw a thin line of black cream liner to conceal lash band completely! Xx

Top Tweet: my desert island must-haves would be SPF & more SPF. And a cell phone to get myself off said Desert Island.

Who: Sam McKnight
Twitter: @sammcknight1
What: Like Pat, Sam McKnight is considered one of the leading stylists backstage at fashion week, but this time for hair – his most recent work included the gorgeous snoods and loose waves at Chanel’s A/W ’12 couture fashion week show. With news about his latest shoots along with haircare and styling tips, there are always a few sneak peeks at the runway and behind-the-scenes looks via Twitter before they hit anywhere else, so you really do feel like you’re backstage.
Top Tweet: I wish people would change their hairstyles more from day2day. Easy to achieve. Cheaper than a new bag. And more effective.

Who: Emily Weiss
Twitter: @IntoTheGloss
What: Meet the editor of Into The Gloss, Emily Weiss. Her site is dedicated to all things beauty behind-the-scenes, with in-depth profiles on the likes of Milla Jovovich to the latest It girls, while also giving you an all-access pass for a glimpse backstage at the hottest shows at fashion week. Through her Twitter account she offers tips and tricks with an approachable and achievable tone, along with answering any makeup questions you might have on her sister account @AskBobbiBrown. In other words, it’s like having instant access to your own personal makeup artist.
Top Tweet: #BobbiTip‬: If your best feature is your lashes, don’t apply too much mascara to your lower lashes. It will cast a shadow under the eyes.

Who: Rae Morris
Twitter: @raemorrismakeup
What: Along with being the Australian L’Oréal Paris Makeup Director, Rae Morris is also a four-time Makeup Artist of the Year and author, with her beauty books touching on all facets of beauty with easy-to-read and recreate tips. Top Tweet: #makeup tip, If you’re wondering if your eyeshadow is highlighting lines around your eyes, just swipe it across the back of your hand, and if this test patch looks more wrinkly, opt for a matte shade instead!

Who: Nars Cosmetics
Twitter: @NARSissist
What: Tweets direct from Nars HQ in New York City. ‘Nuff said. But seriously, beauty advice is dished out in a friendly, conversational tone, as well as your beauty myths and concerns busted with easy-to-follow advice. And if you love NYC as much as we do, the snaps of the Nars Flagship Bleecker Street store are enough to make you weak-kneed. That, and of course countless colourful Nars palettes.

I’m not on twitter. I find it a confusing medium but I’m sure it would be good for following your fave brands if you can work out how to use it.
