Primpettes, you know as well as I do that some beauty trends, read: ombre hair and nails, will come and go, but then there are those, like a classic red lip and smoky eye that are for keeps. Like the little black dress of your wardrobe, the beauty of these makeup looks is that they not only pack a serious punch in the attention stakes, but they’re brilliantly buildable, ridiculously versatile – once you’ve got the application technique down pat, your colour options are endless, and most of all, easy-as to create.
Let’s start with some helpful tips for the smoky eye shall we….
1. Keep your base until last: Regardless of whether you’re opting for a summer-friendly bronzed, earthy-toned eye like GMJ’s or a classic charcoal number, fallout is inevitable. To keep your skin looking fresh, wait until you’re completely finished with the eyes before you tackle your foundation and concealer. Otherwise, you’ll spend the entire time trying to clean up the excess shadow.
The handiest of tip of them all: The easiest way to clean up fallout is to wipe away the product using a cotton tip soaked in foundation. The same goes for messy mascara smudges, too.
2. Use colour, not black liner on the bottom lash line: If you’re opting for a coloured smoky eye, like emerald green, amethyst, sapphire blue, or gold, ditch the heavy black liner and blend a small amount of eye shadow directly underneath the bottom lash line for subtle definition.
Moving on to the Red lip…
It’s a fact: Nothing says I rule the world like a bold red lip. If you haven’t tried it yet, you truly don’t know what you’re missing out on. Other women will stare at you out of pure admiration or nostalgia. It’s likely to conjure up flashbacks of their Mum or Nan with their trademark scarlet lip and prompt them to want to bring a little old-school glamour back into their life. Pronto.
1. Crack the colour code first: Finding the perfect red depends entirely on your skin tone. If you’re unsure whether you have a warm or cool skin tone, head up to the beauty counter and ask the makeup artist to point you in the right direction. Or, you could save yourself the bus ride and pop over here and work it out for yourself.
2. Conceal like a bandit: Like a pink, or coral lipstick, red can exaggerate any existing blemishes in the skin, so make sure you conceal. I always suggest applying your foundation first before whacking on the lippie, and then take another look at your skin to check out any spots that need added coverage, like the chin area, or the sides of the nose.
Over to you now, Primpettes…
