What to Buy this Week: The Pastel Nail Polish Edition

Mon, 27 August 2012 2:03PM

Hayley is zipping around Roma on a Vespa or eating gelato while ambling through Firenze at the moment. So I thought I’d take the opportunity to pop into her Blush Hour column today and talk pretty polish. Because as you probably know by now, Hayley is our lover of all things nails. As well as PRIMPED’s resident manicurist. In fact, so adept is Hayley at crafting an artistic tip – from marble swirls to polka dots – that I live and work in fear of some big nail company snatching my lovely and talented colleague away from me.

So the reason for my blogging here today is that (in addition to telling Hayley I would fall apart without her, no pressure or anything …) two absolutely delightful nail polishes ranges have just hit the market. And if Hayley were here she’d so want you to know about them.

In perfect time for Spring (five sleeps to go, peeps!), these polishes are suitably pretty and pastel and everything you should want to wear on your toe and finger tips right now.

Here’s what you need to know …

Kit Cosmetics Sweet & Chic Macaroon Nail Collection, $15.95 each, Kit.

Look how scrumptious they are!:

Don’t you just want to inhale them all up? Well, guess what … You actually can! Because once dry, these sweeties are scented to match the macaroon each colour is inspired by: Sweet Almond, Lemon, Rose, Lavender and Pistachio. Paint your nails, close your eyes, take a deep breath – and you could easily imagine yourself to be sitting pretty in a Parisian patisserie.

Now onto …

Mecca Cosmetica Spring 2012 Nail Colour collection, $22 each, Mecca Cosmetica

Mecca’s Nail Colour comes as close to polish perfection as you can get. We just can’t fault it. Particularly the so-hip-it-hurts shades. Yes, sure, we know pastel is nothing new. But Mecca’s take on the trend has ever-so enough of an edge of fluoro to make each colour really pop. And to baby-step us towards the neon trend that’s on its way (OPI and Orly are both releasing neon ranges soon; watch this space!).

UPDATE: So yesterday, in my excitement to tell you about the new Kit and Mecca Cosmetica pastel collection, I totally forgot that I had another new range of pretty polishes on the very fingertips that were furiously bashing away at the keyboard:

This is a snap of my a manicure I had on Friday, at an appointment to test Hello Darling’s new spring 2012 range (can I just say: I love my job). Called Not Your Nanna’s Nightie, it’s a collection of seven polishes all inspired by the soft, muted tones of 1950s lace and lingerie. The colours are so ridiculously pretty that I couldn’t settle on just one … thus the multi-hued manicure you see here. Don’t you love the ombré effect? It totally looks like that was my intention.

You may remember Hayley gave Hello Darling’s rock candy manicure a whirl a while back … This was the first time I’ve worn the new Australian brand’s polish and I’m super-impressed. The colour is gorgeously creamy and opaque; two coats are all you need for an even, perfect finish. And it wears well – only this morning did I notice a couple of chips (although it may be because I haven’t slicked on top coat as I should be doing daily; bad beauty editor!). Look out for the polish in selected salons and online any minute from now; for more information, click here.

So, my pretty pastel-loving Primpers – are you as excited as I am?

Which pastel shade will you reach for first?

And what do you think about the idea of neon nails?

Kat x

Love that Kit set, delightful colours!

Question: I always seem to try to match my nail colour to my outfit, or at least to complement it. I then try to spend the next few days coordinating my clothes around my polish!

Do other people do that? Or do they just wear whatever even if the nail polish clashes?

    those pastel shades look great.

I agree, BeaverCity, I try and match my wardrobe to my nails too!
Although sometimes it gets hard and I end up with jeans and a black top, because I dont have time to re-paint! lol

I love those pastels too – but I do agree that I try to match my nail polish colour with my clothes.

As for the pastels, I feel they look so much nicer with just a touch of summer glow and not like now where im winter pale…. so perhaps in another month or two…

Loving pastel nail colours at the moment! Apricot is my favourite right now! Makes me feel like spring’s coming.

BeaverCity, I do the same with the matching or complementing my nails to what I’m wearing.

I love the pastel shades. I just picked myself up a bargain Maybelline yellow polish, it’s bright sunny yellow though but can’t wait to receive it.
