Lindsay Lohan’s lips and the problem I have with injections in that area.

Tue, 6 October 2009 10:16AM

So, you know how Lindsay Lohan was (somehow) given the (dubious) role of artistic advisor for Emanuel Ungaro? Well here’s a photo of her backstage posing with a model… and providing a wonderful case for NOT getting hair extensions, NOT going overboard with self tan and most importantly, NOT getting lip injections.

And let’s a get a close up of that, shall we?

And an even closer one of those pretty lips…

(Please note especially how fresh and chic the model next to her looks in comparison. Oh, you already did? Great job.)

Like anything you feel improves your appearance, from spray tans to eyebrow waxing, to IPL to Botox to acrylic nails, we all know how easy it is to become addicted, and how easily you can fall into a cycle of upkeep and maintenance. BUT. When you’re doing 12 of them, all at once, it can get a little much. And it can look a little too much. As Lindsay’s face generously demonstrates.

As for lip injections. Yes, they can make a ‘maturing’ face look more youthful, certainly they can.

However, I am:

A. Yet to see a good lip injection. And they just get worse, and the lips lumpier the more injections you have.
B. Very against them for women under the age of 25. They just look tacky. (Or distracting. Cue Keira Knightley.)

And! There are so many excellent lip plumpers out there! (See this video for how to cheat your way to Scarlett Johansson lips) like Sally Hansen’s Lip Inflation Extreme, for example.

Finally, if that wasn’t enough to turn you off, when I was at Harper’s BAZAAR, I interviewed Dr Sherrell Aston, one of, if not the world’s best plastic surgeons, who in great detail told me that while women are told the fillers they pop into our lips are biocompatible (that is, able to be completely broken down by the body), when he lifts (stay with me here) women’s faces for their facelift, he sees a disgusting build up of grey sludgy jelly, where all that filler has built up.

Also, and this is even more important, and a big reason why women who get repeated injections get that lovely, rollercoaster lip look, is that it’s not just about the filler remnants staying in the body, it’s the tracks the needles take for the fillers, which harden and stiffen over time.

Sexy.

(Handy hint: outlining your lips with concealer THEN applying your clear/pink/nude gloss also makes your lips look plumper.)

Are you into lip injections?
Were you before reading this post but are not anymore?
Would you get them?

Totally agree. Not good. But – Keira hasn’t had them done, has she?

Keira Knightley has had her upper lip done, I read it in an interview a while ago.

Lohan looks bloody awful. And remember Jessica Simpson’s trout pout? Yuck!

The above pics also make an extremely good case for exfoliating, sleeping and not smoking. Erk!

Botox isn’t a filler, (it restricts movement by ‘paralysing’ muscles) so there’s no build up, no.

Interesting side note: Dr Aston said Botox has a higher safety profile than aspirin.

She looks scary. And way too plastic for someone her age.

Ooh I think the problem is all the cigs, drinks, meth and crack :/ Though of course bad lip injections, fake tan and hair extensions do nothing to help.

Answer is no no no! I will not get lip injection – and especially not after reading your article.

Poor Lindsey, she looks miserable. All that make up does not manage to hide eye bags and what looks like a generally bad state of health.

The buildup that Dr Aston referred to is really scary. Zoe, do you know if other fillers (e.g. botox) used around the eyearea also result in such buildup?

Thanks Zoe. It would be great if you could do a whole post on non-invasive procedures like botox etc for those of us considering the next anti-aging step after SPF 30+ and good skin care!

Linds, Linds, Linds when will she wake up to her self. Isn’t she a natural red head? I’ve never seen a red head successfully pull off a blonde dye job. The only person who has is Nicole Kidman who had strawberry blonde hair to begin with. I have pondered this point for years being red myself. No amount of fake tan will ever make the skin look good, plus the regrowth is the ugliest I have ever seen. Watch out for her ever returning to her natural colour and she will look 10 times better. This will probably never happen as Linds is determined to look like a ho.

Holy Smokes! Li-Lo is looking like she’s 24 going on 40. Move over Jocelyn Wildenstein someone is going to be taking over your Cat Woman title.

RE: lip fillers. I’d NEVER put any synthetic filler in my lips—but I’ve had my OWN fat injected into my lips 12 times over the last 12 years. No bad effects. It’s permanent now and I’ll never need to do it again. If it is your OWN tissue there can be no “gunky buildup” as one blogger commented. I’m glad I did it. People tell me all the time what a beautiful mouth I have. Some have even commented about how lucky I am I don’t need to do anything to my lips. (I don’t tell them I already DID something.)
