Mary Kate Olsen no longer looks like a small homeless child.

She looks foxy! Refined! Sexy even! I was immediately struck by her devilish brand of glamour: Pale, matte face, walloping great red lip and her super blonde, super curly, flipped-over-fringe mop. And suddenly it struck me: Our little MK is all grown up.
Here she is at the The Metropolitan Opera’s 125th Anniversary Gala at The Metropolitan Opera House, NYC.
And I think she looks a treat. In a time of safe and skanky celebrities, MK and Ashley (along with Chloe Sevigny, Natalie Portman, Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth and Daryl Somers) always, always do great things for both fashion, and beauty. I put it to you that even if you don’t copy everything she’s doing here, or you think that all together, it’s a bit much, she’s quietly making you think that maybe your hair might look cool like that, in that bright shade of buttery blonde, or curled with a messy plait tucked into the lengths and a wild fringe, or that you might wear a slightly smoky eye with your red lip next time you’re dressing up… (Try this one, in Red Muse.)
The Olsens are always there with a fun new take on blazers or mini skirts or heavy silver accessories, but WAY more importantly, with a new hairstyle, new hair colour, new smoky eye or a slash of McDonald’s-red lipstick. They’re not afraid to play, that’s what I love about them. They know the art of dressing up when it’s required, they play faux-hobo with ease and elegance but either way, they always, always do something a little bit cool, and just that little bit new and jarring.
Do you agree?
Or do you think they’re feral little fashionistas who could do with using a brush every now and then?
