Revlon PhotoReady: creating Facebook defaults at every opportunity.

Tue, 16 February 2010 3:21PM

I feel sorry for people on the telly. All that wizzbang techy high-definition wizardry is making the specific brand of polished perfection TV people are meant to have trickier and trickier, because we can now see every pore, spot or wrinkle. It might interest you to know (my statisticians believe there is a 71% chance of you being interested) that this move towards super high-definition everything, which let’s be honest, with the way we carry on with video cameras and mobile phone cameras and just cameras in general these days doesn’t just involve the people on the telly, is influencing cosmetics, and we now have foundation specifically created to make skin look awesome, even under the most ridiculous lighting and the most incredible (still or video) cameras. Like Revlon PhotoReady. This can only benefit us Regular Folk.

The point of this new liquid foundation from Revlon (on sale next week) is to perfect your skin, blur the lines, give an overall radiance, but without shine, because one obviously does not like to be shiny when one is being snapped or filmed, (and according to my sources, neither does two.) If you’ve always wanted luminous skin, but not dewy skin, or you suffer from shine or oiliness, this gear will make you giddy.

I know of only one foundation that claims to do this, which is Make Up For Ever’s HD foundation, which costs a loooooot more than Revlon’s offering. (Apparently L’Oreal will be launching a HD foundation later this year in their Studio Secrets line, and my guess is so will everyone else, just like when airbrush makeup or mineral makeup hit, this is a Big New Technology Trend.)

It’s a semi-matte finish, right, but then it has the subtle “shimmer” through it, and I used “these” because shimmer is not entirely the correct word, but there is definitely a kind of micro-luminescence in this stuff, which is, I think, the main reason it is awesome. Because when a flash goes off, or when you are on film, the light and lens will be tricked and confused into thinking you have this kind of luminous blanket over your face, and there are no flaws, because it all becomes one big haze of great-looking skin. God I’m scientific.

The PhotoReady Makeup, $36.95 is oil and fragrance-free, has SPF 20 and is medium coverage, (but even when I layered my skin still looked natural and skin-like) very lightweight (VERY), and there really does seem to be some pore-invisibleiser in there, because you just end up with this uniform canvas that is begging for bright lips. There is a powder as well, AND a featherlight Translucent Finisher, $34.95 so you can set your hazy perfect face delicately and get even more staying power. Finally, the pump dispenser is awesome and good for grubs like me who tend to make a mess with non-pump dispensers.

Fun tip: You may want to mix in a little primer before applying, as I found it was a little dry after half a day. (NB: I am Golden Beige, which has a lovely yellow base for my fake-tanned skin.) On the flip side, if you have skin that verges on oily, you will LOVE this effect, because your blotting and touching up will be dramatically minimised, if not entirely obliterated.

Fun tip #2: If you have blemishes, simply use with concealer and definitely set with the PhotoReady Powder, $34.95 just to temper that sparkle a little bit.

Fun tip #3: Add some lemon and pepper to avocado on toast for a delicious, filling snack.

You gotta try this stuff. And I mean literally try it – go in store and test it and see what you think it does to your skin. Obviously you should take along a professional photographer and get yourself a few new Facebook defaults while you’re there.

Have you seen it yet? Tried it? Are you pumped?

Oo sounds very promising. One question though…doesn’t the SPF in it affect the ‘photoreadiness’ of it? I remember reading here that you should use a foundation sans SPF if planning to be snapped as It can cause a white sheen on your face in the pics?

Zoe, darling, you had me at the word micro-luminescence!!

Good point Holly, however I imagine the top layer of ‘sparkle’ and all the blurring particles outweigh the SPF factor.

Sounds gorgeous Zoe, and I can’t wait to try it out – but will it come in a shade that suits my pinky fair skin?

  • Posted by: theloveofpink // Tue, 16 February 2010 11:42am

ozlicious my love, someone cleverer can correct me, but I think this comes in ivory (#1) & vanilla (#2) – ivory in colorstay is perfect for my see-through white face, so if they’re the same, you should totes be right. xx

I bought both the foundation and the powder yesterday, and while it was all pretty this morning, it’s 11:20 and I look like an oil slick!
Off to buy blotting papers at lunch and figure where I’ve gone wrong…

I have the photoready foundation and think it is mostly great but really not for dry skin, I primed as well as mixing my primer and the photoready together and still didn’t like the way it seemed to accentuate any dry spots, will try mixing it with other moisturisers and see if it can be remedied

Oh wow, I am very excited about this! Sounds like it ticks all the boxes!
