Top 10: SAGs Red Carpet Makeup
Fri, 30 January 2009 8:16AM
Wedged between the Globes and the Oscars sits the SAGs, an awards ceremony that offers just as much star power (might be a mild exaggeration) and just as much makeup. Great makeup. Brain-bending makeup. And so, without further achoo (I used to think that was how the sentence went) here are the Top 10 makeup looks from the Screen Actors Guild awards.
1. January “sex on a stick” Jones.
The golden-bronze eye shadow, the feisty Cleopatra liner, the perfectly muted goldy-nude lipgloss and the terracotta bronzer… it’s perfect. And, perfectly suited to her gold-embellished black dress. Winner.

2. Anne “break up? what break up?” Hathaway
Rosey lipstick, clean, slick liner on the top lid only to create the illusion of making her large, downward sloping eyes look sexy and feline and a flush of blush on the apples. She looks fresh and polished, the ideal compliment to her sexy hair and elegant dress. Best I’ve seen her so far.

3. Freida “stupidly pretty” Pinto
I am not ashamed to say I love a little bit of matchy-matchy with eye colour and outfit. Not so you look like a Bratz doll, of course, just a flash of colour on the lids to bring out the dress. Like Ms Slumdog Millionaire, here. Here’s how to get the look.

4. Teri “grinners are winners” Hatcher
Teri was just one of many birds who opted for a subtle pastel shadow and let her hair and her smile and her wowzey dress do the talking. I vote YES, Teri. I vote yes.

5. Kate “I’ll take the Oscar, too, thanks” Winslet
Ah Kate. You rascally little rabbit. You play it down with your hair (simple updo with a kind of average fringe), and your dress (although I must say I love the cleavage and the brilliant gem blue colour) and your simple very faint pink shadow, and you let your Best Actress award do all the talking. Impressive.

6. Diane “poster girl for aging gracefully” Lane
Red hot dress. Chic updo. False lashes, lovely thick, well-shaped brows (crucial when you’ve gone for pared-down makeup on the red carpet), a swipe of brown shadow and nudey lipstick. Way to show off your exceptional genes and genuine beauty, Laney.

7. Keisha “uh, you might know my husband, Forest?” Whitaker
I’d never heard or seen of her before either, but Keisha nailed this fresh red carpet look, which plays up her brown eyes and cocoa skin and deep green dress adn gold accessories. The wash of yellow-gold shadow, invisible liquid liner along the top lashline, the peachy-bronze blush and skin-toned gloss, being so simple and unlikely to smear or move, will look good all night. Very Halle Berry. Very nice.

8. America “sisterhood of the traveling Betty” Ferrara
Good one, Amez. Your ruby red lips are so fun with your shimmery shadow and dark hair jammed into a just-so side pony. This is the fresh way to do a red lip, and is as lovely in the day as the night.

9. Sarah “guess my age” Sarandon
Proof that a bright red-coral lip looks cracking at ANY age, Suse instantly lifts her face (and brings down her age) with a pop of kaPOW on her lips. Shimmery, peachy cheeks add to the radiance. The whopping great cleavage… I’m not so sure about. But the lips, the lips!

10. Angelina “I fear change” Jolie
Not much to say about this, her Standard Operating Procedure Makeup, but it’s gorgeous all the same. I definitely recommend following suite with the gently sunkissed cheekbones and delicate upper lashline liner and false lashes and nude lips if you are devastatingly beautiful and don’t require anything more. The rest of us? We get to play with eyeshadow and stuff.
(More fun.) (Way more fun.)

Susan Sarandon looks fabulous. I think her boobs look good, too. If you’ve got em, flaunt em!
