Twuestion time: Just some pretty awesome eyeliner techniques you’ll love. Whatever.

Thu, 3 November 2011 2:40PM

The Twuestion comes care of one Miss CHELSEA PREEN @chelspreen who says/asks: yay! Love twuestion time! What’s the best way to use eyeliner? As in, inside lid or on top of lid??

And here is my Twanser:

Regarding the “yay” – Yes! It IS exciting, isn’t it! I agree. Eye liner is a real marvel.

Scarlett Johansson
Elegant, top lashline liner only for Miss SCARLETT. Delightful.

Regarding the best way to use eye liner, it depends on what look you want. And for the sake of brevity and keeping things simple, I will JUST be focusing on traditional pencil eye liners, not gel ones and not shadow-used-as-liner either, because I will end up writing too much and boring the haggis out of you all.

Handy hint! When applying (any) eye liner, I find it best to tilt your head back on an angle and look down into the mirror. You can see more of the lashline this way.

1. For a gentle, I’m-not-really-wearing-eyeliner, and you want your lashes to appear fat and luscious-as, look, dot eyeliner between the lashes on the upper lash line. This is a Very Old Makeup Artist Trick and they all swear by it.

2. When you are a bit rubbish at getting it right on the lashline, do the line first in a light brown pencil. Then go over it with black. Like tracing when you were in Year Two.

3. For an ANGELINA JOLIE style wing, do your usual line, then when you get to outer corner, stop. Now start a new line at the very end of the bottom lash line, and follow the exact angle that bottom lashline would follow if it kept going up to meet the end of your eyebrow. Just go a cm or so. Fill in the little triangle between the two lines. (Or, cheat with that aweso winged eye liner trick.)

Another handy hint! For massive staying power, follow your eye pencil line with a gel liner (the ones in the little pots, such as MAC Fluidline) or a wet liner brush dipped into eye shadow. Go troppo and do a metallic shadow over your black kohl, for example. TROP. OH.

4. For a profoundly flattering look that will confuse everyone because they will think you’re wearing liner, but not be able to see it, waterline. Waterlining is when you apply liner to the inner lashline. We often do it on the lower lashline, by pulling down the bottom eye lid and lining in that fleshy bit between the lashes and the eyeball, but when you do it up top, it’s even better-er-er. The trick I find, is to use a soft, gentle kohl texture and to gently pull up your top lashline with your pinky, and then line. It will be VERY STRANGE when you first do it, and your natural instinct will be to blink like a crazed fool, but persevere, man! It takes some practice. But then you’ll nail it and you’ll wonder how you ever did without it, and why you would even bother with liner on TOP of the lashline. As well as looking dainty and making your eyes look bigger with just mascara, it looks smashing when you’re doing a smoky eye and you waterline the top and the lower lashline, too. And if you find it’s smudging and fading quickly (which can happen), just line your eyes as you would regularly and then when your waterlining disappears, you’ll still have those lines in place.

Handy hint! Keep your pinky in place when you’ve done your waterlining for a few seconds to allow the eye liner to set. And, use a waterproof eye liner to extra staying power.

Important hint that is more of a rule! Do NOT use liquid liner or glittery eye pencils when you waterline. You’re begging for irritation.

Sweet liner prodz I like:

Rimmel Soft Kohl
Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner
Revlon Colorstay Liner
Chanel Crayon Yeux (waterproof)
Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil

Do you waterline?
Do you have a super giga awesome eyeliner we need to know about?
Do you think less of me for eating pizza twice today? You shouldn’t. You would have done the same thing in my position. (“Hungry.”)

Is there anyway to stop the pencil liner smudging?! Mine always ends up on the upper part of my eye-lid. I have bought the mac liquid pot but often I can’t be bothered with the extra time it takes to use it (pencl is so much faster and easier!)

waterlining is the best way for blondies like me to get a slightly more smoky eye look with kohl without looking like a tramp (ie because it doesn’t smudge everywhere like lining the outsides do). i then use liquid liner on the top line to prevent said smudgy tramp look

Anna, I love Two Face Eyeshadow Insurance, it’s like a primer for eye make up. I make sure I get it down to the lashline (so no good for waterlining) and it honestly stays put, because I have the same problem!

COVERGIRL exact eyelights are bloody brilliant, I have collected the whole colour range (there’s 4) they stay on my waterline so well I usually have to get a sponge tip to get it off… Oh and Almay crayon contour eyeliner is just a good too!!!

ooh, i love the top waterline trick – I use it all the time. In fact, I often line the top waterline, then close my eyes really tightly and some of the liner transfers to my bottom waterline – gives a bit of definition on the bottom without being too dark :)

    Oh Zoe, I is a little confused…

I’m sure I’ve read on Primped before that putting eyeliner on the inner rim of the eyelid is a no-no as it can introduce bacteria and irritation to the eye. Yes? No? Maybe??

I’ve been waterlining for years and I didn’t even know it was called that!

  • Posted by: Lizzy // Thu, 22 July 2010 09:55pm

can anyone recommend a great eye makeup remover? i love wearing eye liner but sometimes find it reallly hard to get off, especially when it’s on the inner rims of my eyes!

I really like the Lancome pencil, I forget the exact name but it’s really long, so lasts ages, as well as being soft and non scratchy to apply. I have tried heaps of eye make up removers but my fave is Garnier, with the half blue, half clear dual phase which you shake. Practically the same as Lancome but a fraction of the price, give it a go!

Georgie86, I flood my eyes with moisturising eye drops (bion tears, thera tears, optive) and carefully use a sponge tip to sort of dab it off the inner rims.

Thanks Jelly and AwZ, will give them a go. Good idea with the eye drops, I hadn’t thought of that before!

I gave top-water lining a go the other day, and it actually looked pretty good. A lot more subtle than lining the top of my eyelid.

  • Posted by: georgiamae83 Devotee // Tue, 27 July 2010 02:30pm

So it is meant to be really subtle? The waterlining I mean? I gave it a go the other day and then wasn’t too sure what to expect it to look like.
so it’s all about the subtlety?

Love wearing eyeliner…I could probably forgo mascara but definitely not my liner!

I love wearing eyeliner but I’m not great at putting it on. Practise makes perfect I suppose. I use the “tracing trick” because I’m not good at drawing the winged shape and it works a treat:)

I love zoe’s blogs. and I love the eyeliner on the upper waterline trick, it really does make ur lashes look full and thick

  • Posted by: noodle // Thu, 3 November 2011 07:11pm

I’ve never really been a fan of kohl liners, they always schmear just everywhere on my face and give me epic panda eyes so I’ll pretty much only use liquid or gel. I like liquid to do the 50s cat eye flick, but instead of waterlining, I tightline with the gel liner, which is where you only place it on the inner lash line from about 3/4 of your eye in to the outer corner. Makes your lashes look absolutely LUSH and it never smudges (at least not on me)

I have waterlined on the bottom with a pale white or blue makes eyes pop.

I line my waterline and smudge it with eyeshadow to prevent any smudging. I found this way it stay long.

Great tips! I prefer liquid because the darn crayons and pencils smudge at the drop of a hat (or an eyelid!)

Covergirl does the best eyeliner, super easy to use. Also, I like Mac’s eyeliner too.

Everyone needs to run out and buy Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner. It is AMAZING. And just as easy to apply as pencil. Comes in a little jar with a nice brush. I just wish there were more colours.

    Great tips Zoe!

Sometimes I wear waterlining when I don’t want an obvious eyeliner. Most of the time I wear eyeliner.

I’ve never tried waterlining my upper, but I’m interested to try it out.. I have a set of Jane Iredale Mystikol liners and they are great for smokey eyes.

I can never understand why girls draw on big smudgey black eyeliner during the day! It looks so trashy. Waterlining is the way to go!

  • Posted by: Prue // Thu, 10 November 2011 11:43pm

love love love waterlining!! I waterline my top lid every day with MAC kohl in teddy – as a pale blondie I need my eyes to stand out otherwise I look tired!! This does it without making me actually look made up – just nicely defined and it makes my blue eyes pop! I even used it on my Mum to line her top waterline and she asked me to buy her the eyeliner as part of her christmas present!! I love passing on makeup tips!! Seriously BIG recommendation for the teddy eye kohl – especially for fellow blondies!! xx

I love when you learn the actual name for techniques or tricks that you’ve been doing for ages! I’d never heard of waterlining until I read this, but I’ve been doing it for years! It’s such a good look!
