How To: Get sexy, textured second-day hair, INSTANTLY.

Thu, 3 September 2009 8:26AM

I’ve been meaning to post about this for, ooh, about twenty years. Because seriously? The invention below changed my entire hair styling world. And selfishly, this happened years back, and I am only just telling you about this exceptional product now.

So, you’ve probably seen people like MISS KATE MOSS and THE OLSENS and MISS LARA BINGLE and fashiony types and pretty much every model in every cool clothing ad campaign ever and looked at their hair and thought, ‘Man, I could really go some nachos right now’. And then, not seconds later, thought, ‘How, HOW do they get that gritty, textured, bedhead, matte, piecey look? What is the product or the styling step that they know, and I do not? Why is my hair always fluffy or too shiny when sometimes I just want it to be all rock and roll and sexy? Why can it not be a little less … “perfect” and boofy?

Here is the answer: Magical dust.

And I am not even yanking your crank. This shiz is MAGIC.

Camilla and Marc, s/s 09-10

What it is: A “wet” dust. One of the strangest textures I’ve ever felt. It comes out like powder, but then changes into a kind of…. invisible…. wet…. something. Kind of how I imagine the inside of a frog’s house to feel.

What it does: Instantly grits up your hair. Gives texture. A dry matte finish. Thickens the hair. Makes it gently piecey, without making it look lank or greasy. Adds volume. Makes hair look second-day. Enthuses people to comment on your hair. Enthuses people to be jealous of your hair.

How you apply it:
Shake a small amount onto your hands if you’re a novice. (Stylists will powder it directly onto the scalp. So renegade!) Then rub into the scalp where you want some A) Grit and B) Volume. Important note: This stuff can only be used on DRY HAIR.

What I do: On freshly washed, styled hair, that looks…. nice… but not sexy and filmclipy, I flip my head over and sprinkle lightly all over the underneath of my hair for a few seconds. I then flip my head up and massage it in. There is INSTANT volume. Amazing. Then, I either sprinkle or rub in from my hands a teeny bit on the top of my scalp/the crown/my fringe area. YOU MUST GO GENTLY HERE. Like frizz serums, if you put too much in, it’s very hard to back up. So, just a teeny bit in there, and a bit of a rub and it’s done. Another reason to tread lightly is that if you only do a bit, you can add some more tomorrow and keep the style going, whereas if you go too hard, tomorrow it might start shifting out of sexy town, and into lankville.

Now, what is intersting is that despite being one of the most loved and most clever styling products used on the runway, celebs and in shoots, there are only a handful of magic dusts available. (Kind of like dry shampoo.)

The one I adore, and have been using for years, and is a backstage staple, and was the first to market and is a screaming best seller, is AVEDA’s Pure Abundance Hair Potion, $39.95. Smells rather amazing too.

Other players in the (very small) magic dust market are Instant Rockstar Stardust, $24.95

And Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It Mattifying Powder, $26.95

If you’re serious about sexy second-day hair, you need to get serious about magic dust. Which is a hard sentence to take seriously, but I mean it.

I love the look of the texture and shape of this kind of hair, very model-l and nonchalantly sexy. I would love it if it had a tiny wee bit of healthy shine though… wonder what happens if you put a gentle bit of shine spray on it after dusting?

Ooooh! So that’s how they do it!

Yessssssssssssss this is what I didn’t know I was looking for!

Oh, Rochelle, you can absolutely use it. It doesn’t make anything boofy… in fact quite the opposite. It adds weight, texture, not… width. It’s very hard to articulate, but basically it makes your hair look lived in, languid, lovely.

Oh and Bea, shine on! It’s your prerogative! Just run a little shine serum/spray through mid-lengths to ends.

Suz3, where did you find it?!!!

  • Posted by: MissA Newbie // Mon, 1 February 2010 04:23pm

Toni and Guy have just launched one too: Resurrection Dust – if you can find it, sold out pretty fast. There is always the good old spray in version from Bumble & bumble, though its coloured so if you’re a hair toucher you’ll get stained fingers

Thanks Zoe! Quick question – is this product OK for those who already have thick (but boring!) hair, or will it be too boofy?
