NYE 2012: Beauty Countdown – Sensational Hair

Thu, 27 December 2012 9:00AM

There are a few nights of the year when your hair has to appear smoking hot. Scorching. Literally a-glow.

New Year’s Eve is one such night for those of you celebrating in style at a soirée or cocktail party. For those camping out with your cousins or playing Yahtzee with your in-laws, well, you can be forgiven for logging off at this point to put the kettle on.

Whatever your shindig of choice, there is no dress code set to how you should celebrate come the end of another 365 days.

The same goes for hair. You can play it safe or, just don’t. If you going to play it glam? May I suggest a few tousled curls?

There are certain preparations you need to take before you face the precipice of 2013, and they need to begin, like, yesterday. But if you get your engine revving now, the countdown to fireworks-worthy hair on December 31 is a lot less fractured, frenzied and out-of-tune-awkward than the 10,9,8…on the night.

4 DAYS TO GO …

If you’re after a trim pre-champagne pop, now is the time as the closer to the event this is done, the healthier the hair will look. If it’s colour you are getting, today is also a great stage to do so also. Always leave the salon with a good quality shampoo to seal in the colour and ask for a leave-in-conditioner if you think your hair will need some additional CPR to get it through the next few days. Try: Wella Pro Series Colour Shampoo and Conditioner, $10.99 each, from selected salons (I use these. They’re like super-glue for any hue.)

NB: Don’t spin on those sandals out of the salon before you’ve made an appointment for NYE styling… if that is your want. If you’re too late to score a slot, throw your hat in the cancellation-list ring. You never know how many people will get stuck in the queue at Dan Murphy’s and not show for their hair appointment. “Most salons stay open during the Christmas season but things tend to die off at 5.30pm as people are on their way out to all their fabulous parties,” says Renya Xydis, celebrity stylist and founder of Valonz, suggesting that the P.M appointments may be your best bet.

3 DAYS TO GO …

Whether you had a trim or not, this is the time to infuse hair with heaps of hydration. A good heat-conditioning mask works wonders in minimal time, and the shine will stick around for longer than the most tenacious revelers. Try: Sebastian Penetraitt Masque, $36, from selected salons.

2 DAYS TO GO …

If you haven’t had your colour done yet, today is your last chance – preferably if it’s subtle. If, however, you’re in for a dramatic change, you only have 48 hours left to freak out, cry, call your mum, eye the clippers, look for wigs, cry and eat a box of Tim Tams. So be smart. If you’re going from long to short, black to blonde, save it until January, when you’ve got an entire month to hide under your sun hat.

1 DAY TO GO …

It’s not an old wives’ tale that two rounds of shampoo and two of conditioner are needed to give hair a serious clean, and this is the day to do it. By giving it one mother of a scrub, you are ensuring your hair will not be greasy on the night, but hold enough grit to enhance any style.

Today is also the day for the blow-dry, advises Renya. “But leave your hair alone as much as you can from hereon in,” she advises.  If you blow-dry your hair at home, Kevin Murphy Hair.Resort.Spray, $34.95, from salons, gives great texture and a dry shampoo is always a good idea if you’re feeling the need to absorb an over-zealous scalp. “If you can’t make it to the salon, make friends with your dry shampoo. It has the potential to be your saving grace not only when your hair is dirty but also to give it a bit of styling grit before you go out,” says Renya. Try: Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo, $14.95, Priceline.

NYE …

Don’t stress: DIY hair can be just as on-trend and terrifically done as in the salon…kind of. If you’ve done a blow-dry yesterday, hair should be smooth but not too structured. Fire up your tongs and work some waves throughout the lengths of hair. Once done, run your fingers through to separate (which is exactly what Renya does when styling Miranda Kerr) and mist on a hairspray to help lock locks into place and help them hold up on that sweaty dancefloor.

If you do have a hair appointment, “Be on time, know what you want and allow at least a 45 minutes,” says Renya. Her final words of wisdom: “The key to NYE is not to look like you have tried too hard. There is nothing worse than someone who is overdone and doesn’t look like themselves.”

Next step? Pop the cork, put on your party shoes, and say hello to Happy New Hair/Year.

I agree that nice and natural hair is best for NYE parties, its not a formal so you dont want to look like your going to a wedding. I like loose waves or blow dried hair.

My ny resolution is to become more creative with hairstyles.
If its hot and humid still I will sport an updo to avoid the frizziness.

i love the last line :)
Always when i go for the chop or just colour I have to have it done a week in advance so i have that much time to get used to it. There is nothing worse than not knowing how to style your new hair on the day.

NYE was sooooo hot in Perth that I had no real interest in heat styling my hair. I just put it up in a cute high pony. Problem solved in 2 min flat. :)

I love the curls in the above picture, not much volume at the root (no need to tease) but plenty at the bottom!
