How to: Get Beautiful Nails, With Miranda Kerr’s Manicurist, Jocelyn Petroni

Mon, 26 November 2012 10:03AM

Not only is she one of Australia’s most renowned facialists, but Jocelyn Petroni from The Facial Room in Sydney’s Woollahra also doubles as a Mecca Cosmetica ambassador and nail aficionado. Oh, and whenever Miranda Kerr is in town, Jocelyn is her go-to girl for manis and pedis.

The gorgeous Joss and I sat down to talk all things nails, along with the steps you need to follow in order to get beautifully manicured hands at home.

1. File, Buff and Shape
“Whatever your nail shape, try to file them evenly in both length and shape,” Joss explains. “Imagine your nails are already painted, rather than following the white free edge of your nail. The free edge of each nail is usually quite different in shape and length, and your nail plates (the main section of the nail) are also different lengths. Hold your hand away from you to see which nails should be slightly longer than the others, so that when they are painted they look even in length and shape. Slightly rounded nails that reflect the shape of your natural cuticle look elegant and beautiful, but I love a bold, blunt square-shaped nail.”

2. Care for Cuticles
“Your cuticles need oil and rich nourishment to combat dryness and loose skin,” says Joss. “Because we constantly wash our hands, it’s best to treat cuticles (and hands) before bed with a good lather of oil that can soak in overnight, rather than trying to continually reapply during the day. Use an oil like CND’s Solaroil, $13.95, CND, and then make the treatment even more effective by wearing cotton gloves over the top, creating an occlusive layer that forces the oil deep into the skin.”

3. Always Slick on Base and Top Coat
Joss can’t stress the importance of base and top coats enough. “Always apply one layer of base coat, like CND Sitckey Base Coat, $19.95, CND, to help ‘anchor’ the polish colour onto the nail plate. Next comes your nail colour, and always paint on two coats to ensure even coverage. Lastly apply your top coat, which will not only smooth and even out any bumps, it will also provide a glossy finish and protect your nail colour, while also preventing it from chipping.

4. Update Your Look for the Season
“Current nail trends are bursts of beautiful and bright colours,” says Joss. “While I agree that nail art is a lot of fun, I prefer the sophistication of bold colours on short, square nails. However, right now I can get enough of the new Ciaté Caviar Manicure Black Pearls, $36, Mecca Cosmetica. I love how the texture of the tiny baubles add depth to this this elegant block colour.”

Ps – Miranda’s Favourite Shades?
“Miranda loves classic, feminine shades but she also likes bright pops of colour,” notes Joss. “She loves the Mecca Cosmetica Glide On Nail Colour in Jocelyn, $22, Mecca Cosmetica. It’s a beautiful and fresh yellow that’s not quite neon but not quite pastel either.”

Tell me, Primpers, what’s your classic go-to nail polish shade?

What are your tips for caring for your nails at home?

Do you have any favourite nail care products?

I so want to try/own the ciate caviar. It always looks wonderful and just my kinda thing.
My go to shade is a neon pink. I know this because out of all the polishes i own this own is nearly empty :) and thats unusual.
I care for my nails at home by filing every few days, and always file your nails going in one direction, not back and forth. Each night i rub a hand and nail cream into my hands and rub into my cuticles. A nice clear nail strengthening polish works well between colour polishes as well.
Sally Hansen has a great range of products for nail care and so does manicare!

I just have my first shellac experience last week and so far so goo except for ONE little chip. I have black at the moment, which I like but hopefully I’ll have a nice pop of colour the next time I go!

Healthy Hoof cuticle cream is amazing! It soaks in quite quickly, you only need a tiny amount making it affordable and if you have dry patches on hands or feet it works really well on those areas as well.

I must admit I am a little stuck in a nude rut!
I’m not supposed to wear polish to work, so if I leave it on its less obvious then a bright hue.

I love Revlon’s ‘Siren’, a creamy coral/orange, it always makes me feel cheerful wearing it.

I try and give my nails a break from polish for at least a few days and keep them filed at a length that I think complements my hands. I tried the square ended shape but an oval longer length is more flattering for me. I also rub some extra Rosehip Oil into my cuticles when I put some on my face at night..I figure it can only do them good!
I like Burts Bees Lemon cuticle cream and Sally Hansen Nail and Cuticle cream which has a fresh orange fragrance.

What a great tip for filing nails. I’m a sucker for Butter London polishes and Australis ones for a cheaper option

I like the Dr. Lewinns range of nail care products. I like a slightly rounded nail rather than a square shaped nail. Love the Sally Hansen range too.

I’m pretty slack with my nails, just cut + file, then paint, then take off nail polish when it starts chipping and repeat!

For beautiful nails and hands you can’t get enough handcream (a good one!). I love nailpolish. Everything from nudes to reds to corals to plums. Black is too harsh for me. If you bite your nails or fiddle with your cuticles paint your nails…you’ll look at your hands and think twice about doing it.

I always use Avene Cold Cream, Hand Cream, I love the smell and it leaves my hands soft without being oily. It also doesnt irritate my skin as it is Hypoallergenique.

I love wearing a rich, dark red on my toenails but like my fingers to be buffed with some clear polish on them.

I always make sure that I have a Burts Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream with me at all times because if my nails go unattended for just one day I get really dry cuticles that then peel. My go to nail colour is a pretty pink.

My nails are the most neglected part of my routine… They have been looking pretty rubbish after I tried Shellac and so I have been using OPI’s Nail Envy as a base coat. I love reds- deep, vampy colours, classic reds and most of alll orange-reds!
