Valentine’s Beauty Special 2013: How to: Three Ways to Try Heart-Patterned Nail Art

Mon, 4 February 2013 5:30PM

Love is in the air, do-do-do-do-do-do …

You might have caught on to the fact that we’re getting into the full Valentine’s Day spirit here at PRIMPED – even our logo is getting in on the action! Despite the fact that V-Day is still a little over a week away, we’re already sussing out beauty inspiration for makeup, and of course, I’m deciding what colour to paint my nails. Or, to be precise, what to paint on my nails.

As luck would have it, I perused through our gallery of the latest nail art looks and spotted two recent celebrity examples of loved-up nails:

Kelly Osbourne

Kaley Cuoco

Inspired? Me, too. Here, I talk three ways to create heart-patterned nail art ..

The Heart Tip

  • Despite the fact that the majority of nails aren’t shaped into the talon-like ends we spotted on Kelly, this variation of an upside down heart looks super-cute. Grab one of the new Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes, $14.95, Priceline, and slick on 1-2 coats. I’m wearing Frutti Petutie, a high-shine coral-red.
  • Then, using a nail art pen like Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in White, $9.95, Priceline, start approximately halfway down your nail and draw a heart with the base of the heart at the tip of the nail, then colour it in.
  • Repeat the process on every nail and leave the polish to dry for approximately 10-15 minutes, then layer on a top coat to seal in the colour.

The Heart Stencil

  • Smaller heart patterns can be a little hard to paint on your nails, unless you’re good at free-hand drawing and have a lot of patience. Begin by painting your layer of colour – I’m using Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Peachy Keen.
  • Then, pick up a Manicare Glamnails Nail Art Pens in Jet Black, $9.95, Priceline, which comes with miniature stencils including a heart design. Place the stencil sticker over your nail and gently colour in the centre of the stencil, ensuring that you don’t press down too firmly as the colour may bleed.
  • Then, really carefully peel off the stencil. Once dry, slick on a layer of top coat and voilà!

The Candy Heart

  • Remember those gorgeous, pastel-coloured heart lollies that have sweet messages written on them? I wanted to recreate those on my nails, using a Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in White, $9.95.
  • Slick on your base colour. I stuck with Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Peachy Keen. Wait for it to thoroughly dry, at least 15 minutes. Then, paint a heart – I used Miss Frou Frou Nail Polish in Aqua, $19.95, Valonz - that covers almost the entire surface area of your nail. Again, wait for the polish to dry, at least 15 minutes
  • Pick up your nail art pen to write a small message or the initials of your Valentine inside the heart. You could even add a fine border like I’ve done around the outside. Once dry, add a layer of top coat. So cute, right?

Tell me Primpers, are you going to try love heart nail art this Valentine’s Day?

Or just a beautiful nail polish colour?

The heart candy looks cute as but I don’t think I’m skilled enough to do it!! I like the heart stencil one, I think I’ll do it in different colours though.
