How to: Glamorous Curls Using a Cloud Nine Micro Wand

All kinds of glamorous curls have been sashaying down the red carpets and runways of late. For instance, this shot of Emily Blunt at the Critics’ Choice Awards …
It has all inspired me to get a little more creative with my styling. Especially as I was lucky enough to get an advance preview of the new Cloud Nine Micro Wand, $260, 1300 437 436.
First thoughts: It’s super-easy to use, thanks to the swivel cord – a saviour when you’re trying to get the hang of curling inwards, outwards, or in an anti-clockwise direction – and doesn’t create frizzy curls thanks to the black ceramic barrel, which works to create shine in your hair.
However, I still needed a few expert tips when it came to creating amazing curls.
Begin with freshly washed or ‘second-day’ hair, and add some dry shampoo to your roots to create texture. “This is what gives it movement and a little grit, enabling you to create that bendy curl,” says Renya.
Use a comb to create a deep side part on your preferred side, then roughly separate hair into two halves, bringing each forward, in front of your shoulders. “The reason you want to direct the hair forward is because you don’t want it to be curled at the back,” explains Renya. “You want it to sit around the front and frame your face and enhance your cheekbones.”
FYI: The genius thing about this technique is that you only need to work in a minimal number of sections, which makes for a rather quick style to create.
Start on the side opposite to where your hair is parted, and hold the wand in your left hand on a horizontal angle and, save for a two-inch section of hair at the fringe, place the Micro Wand underneath that half of hair. Using your right hand, wrap all of your hair around it in an anti-clockwise direction. “Ensure that all of the hair is curled,” advises Renya. “Otherwise you’ll get a kinked-out wave, rather than a soft curl.” Hold it in place for 10-15 seconds. Release the hair from your right hand and pull the wand out of the curl.
You should get a glamorous, curled-under finish. Add a spritz of hairspray, like Sebastian Professional Form Re-Shaper, $9.50, 1300 728 333.
Then, comb the other half of hair around to the front. Hold the wand in your right hand, and angle the nose of the wand towards the floor. With your left hand, wrap your hair over and around the wand in a clockwise direction. Hold in place for 10-15 seconds. Grab your comb and run it through the curl. You can either leave it flowing free, or tuck the hair behind your ear.
Go back to the original side, and pick up the small section of hair at the front and repeat Step Three.
Then, pick up your comb and run it through the curl and move it over to the side and pin it in place with a bobby pin or embellished clip. Spray again with hairspray to keep the curl in place.
Here’s the finished product:
