How to: Three Ways to Wear Glitter Nails
Mon, 12 November 2012 5:15PM
Glitter nail polish as been a longtime favourite of mine, however I often find that there is no consistency from one nail to the next. One always seems to be a solid wash, while the others have a mere speck or two, no matter how many coats I apply, and once I get to coat three, it ends up being too thick and smudges anyway.
Which is why my preferred way to apply and wear glitter nails is by using real glitter, which you can pick up at your local craft store for under $5 for a pack of five. While you can get a little over excited when it comes to colour combinations, a beautiful pale pink and soft, shimmering white gold is lovely for a everyday wear (or even for a bride!), while a nude pairs beautifully with a rich gold.
Here are the three ways you can take a little glitter a long way. Note, it can get a little messy …
The Glitter Tip
Begin by painting your nails your chosen base colour. I’m using Orly’s Nail Polish in Glow, $18.95, 1300 769 355, a soft nude. Once your nails are thoroughly dry, paint a thin coat of polish just on the tips, as if you would for a French manicure. Then, dip them in the tub of glitter, or little pile on your surface, and tap off the excess. Wait approximately five minutes, and then gently press down on the glitter to ensure that it is dry. Slick on a thin top coat and you’re done!
The Ombré Glitter Tip
This is possibly my favourite way with glitter nails, as it looks equally as fabulous as a feature or on every nail. Working one finger at a time, as you need the polish to be wet, add a thin coat of your base colour and then grab your glitter and gently tap the jar so that it sprinkles over your nail. Tip: Try and aim it so that your glitter begins to scatter from the top of your nail down towards your cuticle, so it leaves an ombré-like effect. In other words, you don’t want to just throw it down on your nail. Wait around ten minutes until your nail are dry, then apply a thin coat of top coat.
The Full Wash of Glitter
Perfect for a night out on the town, or the upcoming festive season, a full wash of glitter creates a high-impact nail finish. Begin by pouring out some of your glitter into a small pile onto your work surface. Again, working one finger at a time, paint a thin coat of your base colour, then, moving quickly, roll your fingernail in the pile of glitter, ensuring that your whole nail is coated. Gently clean up around the edges of your nail using a cotton tip dipped in nail polish remover, or sticky tape also works well. Move onto the next nail and repeat the process. After you have completed the glitter wash on one hand, go back and gently press down on each nail to check the polish is dry. Pick up your top coat and paint a thin layer.
