Chanel Iman’s grunge but glam makeup
Wed, 1 June 2011 11:30AM
Model’s are supposed to look ah-mazing on a daily basis, but something has to be said about Chanel Iman pulling off this dark and mysterious makeup. I don’t know about you, but if I use black or deep grey shadows anywhere near my brow bone, I end up looking like I’ve just been beaten with a stick. But Chanel looks phenomenal so let’s see if we can overcome our darkest fears and steal her style:
Step 1: Prep and even your skin tone with a tinted primer, like L’Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Anti-Dull Skin Primer, $37.95. This will create a perfect, dewy base.
Step 2: Now complete your flawless complexion with your favourite sheer to medium coverage foundation, and dab concealer on any area that needs it. We love Australis Paparazzi Perfect Foundation, $19.95, australiscosmetics.com.au.
Step 3: The eyes! Start by lining the inner and upper rim of your lash line with a fine eyeliner pencil, taking it from corner to corner. Try Bourjois Clubbing Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil, $21.
Step 4: Using a charcoal grey shade, like Revlon Luxurious Color Eye Shadow in Platinum Glimmer, $19.95, and an eye shadow brush (which will give you more precision than your finger), apply the shadow to the entire lid. Also apply it just above the lid in the inner corners of the eye, and way above the lid in the outer end of your eye, up towards, but stopping just before, the brows. Round your eye shadow application at the outer corners and finish in line with the edge of your brow.
Step 5: Still using your makeup brush (we recommend Bloom Cosmetics Eye Shadow Brush, $26), take the shadow from up at the end of your brow down in the most direct path to the outer corner of the eye and under the lower lash line in a thin smudge of colour. Keep the application light along here.
Step 6: Swoosh matte bronzer right under your cheekbones and up to your temples. Blend, blend and… stop. Try Jemma Kidd Bronze Perfection Natural Skin, $45.95.
Step 7: Technically this isn’t a step. You’re done! But just in case you don’t feel done, let me remind you that this look calls for a nude lip. As in no gloss, no lipstick and no balm. You don’t need it. Really.
Now for your thoughts, Primpers:
Don’t you just love this grungy, glam look?
Do you struggle with using dark eye shadows too?

I think the makeup suits the model but it is a surprisingly edgy look for Chanel. A bit more on the lips would look better though.

She is seriously smoking – I love this, its understated but pretty intense on the eyes. And OMG her cheekbones!

I really like this look, grey is so versatile.
I must admit I’m not that courageous with a dark eye…will need to work on that phobia though because this example looks sooo goood!

love it! I completely agree that nude lips are the way to go with this look!
Dark eyeshadows are one of the few things that I am good at applying -its light and coloured eyeshadows that I find hard to apply properly!

LOVE IT! When I attempt to do a hugely smoky, dramatic eye, I usually end up looking like I’ve been punched in the face, so tend to concentrate the darker shades lower on my lids!

love this. I’m always so scared of dark eyeshadows cause they’re so easy to mess up but you make it sound so simple. I’ll defs give it a try.
