How to: Charlize Theron’s Shimmering Bronze Eye

Sun, 3 June 2012 7:00PM

I’m jumping back on board the eyeshadow train with a look at the fabulous Charlize Theron at a photo-call for her new film (co-starring K-Stew) Snow White and the Huntsman

Shimmering bronze hues work a treat on blue eyes, Primpettes, and what sets Charlize apart is that she’s switched up the age-old adage that a flawless matte red lip like this should go hand-in-hand with a slick of black eyeliner. Kind of like strawberries and cream. You get the drill. I also love that she’s ramped up the wow factor with a warm, glowing complexion.

Looking to recreate something similar? Me too. Let’s go …

  • First up, let’s go back to basics. Start by smoothing on primer, and then add your favourite foundation, beginning in the centre of your face and blend outwards. To add a little warmth to your skin tone, skip the blush and swirl a warm-toned bronzer on the apple of your cheeks.
  • Then, for the pièce de résistance - that glittering bronzed eye. Smooth an eye primer like Australis Eyeshadow Primer, $12.95, over your eyelid to prep the skin and prevent your makeup from slipping. Then, pick up Australis’ 10HR Wear Waterproof Eye Pencil in Bombastic Bronze, $9.95, which is a high-in-pigment, waterproof and long-lasting eyeliner. One thing I should mention is that I wear contact lenses, and even with my ever-watering eyes, there was no spillage or  streaks. Here she is:

  • So, as I mentioned, this shimmering shade of bronze really makes light eyes pop. Beginning on the outer edge of your eye, pull the skin taut and gently etch the eyeliner along the upper lash line, and using a smudger, gently blending as you go. You need to work quickly, though, as once it’s set, it does. Not. Budge. It leaves a sparkling bronze finish, with a few subtle golden flecks thrown in for good measure. Then, continue along the lower lash line, using the smudger to blend the liner. To finish, sweep a few coats of Australis Killer Curves Mascara, $12.95 on curled lashes.
  • Then, grab a lip pencil as close as possible to your go-to red lipstick shade and line and colour in your lips to really make sure the colour stays put. When it comes to your lipstick, preferably a matte formulation like Charlize’s here, go for gold, paying attention to carefully outline your Cupid’s bow.

What do you think, Primpettes?

Have you tried bronze eyeliner?

For some reason, Charlize looks a bit old in that photo. But she’s still beautiful.

I agree RetroD11, she looks a little tired around the eyes. That said I love the idea of this bronze beauty for my green eyes..my wishlist just grew a little longer.

I agree I don’t think that is a good photo of her, she looks old and I think the makeup was too harsh

I love Charlize but I don’t think that bronze eye is doing her any favours…she looks a bit angry/tired!

Love the berry lip she’s rocking though!

I haven’t tried the bronze eye liner but I would definately, I think it’d be nice to use, especially since my eyes are like a hazel colour, I think the bronze would make my eyes stand out.
