How to: Dylan Cooper’s David Bowie Beauty Look at MBFWA ’12

Tue, 1 May 2012 8:58AM

For Dylan Cooper’s MBFWA show, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics Senior Artist Alphie Sadsad drew inspiration from the fabrics, textures and colours of the collection to create a 1980s beauty look. We caught up with Alphie backstage, who said is was “David Bowie meets James Dean and all of those ’80s geometric shapes, with a strong black eye, and a pop of colour with lilac along the lower lash line … and a really bold, bright lip.” He recommends that for everyday wear, opt for either just the eye or the lip, rather than both at the same time.

Here’s a model at Dylan’s presentation:

And here’s how you can create it at home …

Skin: This look is all about luminous skin that’s both matte and flawless but not heavy – it’s perfect for Winter, and the aim is to achieve a velvety finish. Begin in the centre of your face and apply Skin Foundation, $78, blending outwards. To conceal dark circles, use a concealer brush and, dab the Creamy Concealer Kit, $60, in the inner corner and blend gently. Contour under the cheekbones using Bronzer in Golden Light, $66, sweeping up towards your temple.

Eyes: Dust Eyeshadow in Heather, $44, a soft, shimmering mauve shade across your lid and along your crease. Then, apply Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink, $45, and begin drawing a line along your upper eyelid, working your way from the inner V to the outer edge, gradually building to a thicker line. Next, smudge Eyeshadow in Black Pearl, $44, as close to the lash line as possible, then follow with Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Heather, $50, extending out to a wing on either side. For added definition, apply a few coats of Extreme Party Mascara, $48, ensuring you get right to the base of your lashes for a high-impact finish.

Lips: Models lips were painted with an array of strong, bold colours, with Rich Lip Color in Lilac, $44, in separate occasions combined with both Cosmic Raspberry, $44 and Marrakesh Chic Collection Metallic Lip Color in Violet Glaze, $44, resulting in a high-shine, iridescent finish. Rich Lip Color in Orange, $44, was also one of the shades worn, but Alphie says if you’re looking for something that’s a little less statement-making, apply the lipstick as a stain. Use your ring finger and dab the colour onto your bottom lip and blend to the outer corners, then repeat the process on your top lip, paying close attention to shaping your cupid’s bow.

I LOVE this look! I’d definitely wear one or the other though, not both at the same time!

That model has gorgeous skin, the lippy looks fabulous on her!

I agree. Best to choose one or the other, not both at the same time! But it’s good that you can see how both the eye and lip colours look like on the model xH

Hmm this look might be doable without the lilac liner underneath…otherwise it’s a little too out there for me

A bit too much under the eyes, but overall, quite good and bold and fun! Which is what makeup should be.
