Unstain your nails
Tue, 20 October 2009 4:08PM
It seems like my finger nails have been stained by my fake tan. Can I get them back to their natural, healthy appearance?
Oh, the trouble with looking (healthily) tanned in summer! There’s no doubt that we only encourage getting your tan from a bottle, even though the consequences can be a bit of a pain. (But hey, beats skin cancer, right?) Like removing stains from your skin and clothes, there are a few things you can try to get your nails back in tip top shape.
The lemon juice method
Lemon juice contains natural bleaching properties, so it’s safer to use than regular bleach. Make sure your nails are clean and free of nail polish. Prepare a small bowl with just enough lemon juice to cover your nails (you can slightly dilute it if you wish). Soak your nails in the lemon juice for about 10 minutes. You can either let them dry as they are or rinse them with water and dry with a towel. Alternatively, you can try rubbing a wedge of fresh lemon over your nails. Get into a routine of doing this every night until you see an improvement and stain-free nails!
A word of caution: don’t try this if you have any hangnails or cuts around your nails, as the acidity will sting! And if you’re planning to go out in the sun soon after trying this, rinse your hands thoroughly and apply some sunscreen.
The denture cleaner method
Seeing the word ‘denture’ probably makes you think of toothless grannies, but denture cleaner is an effective way to remove stains. Dissolve a tablet of denture cleaner into a bowl of water and soak your nails for around 10-15 minutes.
You’ll find that there are other remedies that include rubbing whitening toothpaste on your nails, or soaking them in hair body bleach. Just remember that whatever method you use, slap on some hand and cuticle cream, like The Body Shop Vitamin E Hand & Nail Treatment, $19.95, afterwards to return some much-needed moisture to your nails.
