Get a dirty, messy ponytail
Mon, 11 October 2010 4:59PM
I’m loving the textured, messy pony seen on celebs but how do I get a ponytail that’s messy chic and not just messy?
Good one Renee! The great thing about a casual, messy ponytail is that it fits in with the textured trend that’s everywhere right now and it’s an edgy, sexy style you can wear day to night. The key to keeping it cute is to maintain a soft, glossy look – think wispy and floaty with strands of hair framing your face. Personalise your pony with super chic accessories like a bandanna and bobby pins, and with little to no effort required, you can recreate a red carpet ‘do in the time it takes to eat a packet of chips. Undone glamour – please don’t go anywhere.
Here’s how to get it at home:
Step 1: Work David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier, $23.50 into the roots of wet hair, for extra lift. Let the hair dry naturally – summer hair is all about that natural effect, so stay away from the hair dryer and heating tools as much as possible.
Step 2: To add texture and definition, spray L’Oreal Professionel Play Ball Beach Fizz, $29.00 on dry hair and use your hands to work the spray into individual sections. Don’t work against your natural curls if you have them! Enhance them to add edginess to your ponytail.
Step 3: Pull the hair back into a ponytail just below the top of the crown. Keep it tight on the sides and raise the top section slightly securing with bobby pins. If you want a more natural look, leave a few strands loose to shape your face.
Step 4: If you have a fringe, keep the look healthy and shiny by smoothing Redken Outshine 01, $27.00 through your locks. The look you’re going for is textured with lots of movement, but also sleek and glossy.
Step 5: Pop in your favourite headband or bandanna to make it your own.
Step 6: Lastly, lightly mist with Sunsilk Flexihold Hairspray, $4.99 to hold that pony in place. And that’s it!
There you go Renee! Here’s a wearable look you can wear with shorts and thongs or a cocktail dress for later on. Brilliant.
