Mummy-to-Be Makeup: Top Tips & Best Buys

One thing I keep wondering is, do you have to change your make-up whilst pregnant? To make sure none of the nasties in it make their way into your system? Or is that just being too pedantic?
Congratulations blossoming mum-to-be, you are about to embark on one of life’s most beautiful journeys.
While your wardrobe may have to undergo a major shape shift soon (hello, Lycra), the good news is your make-up routine won’t really need to change that much at all. Just look at Lee Watson – about to pop, and as gorgeously maquillaged as ever.
In saying that, during pregnancy it is advisable to err on the side of caution and avoid products that contain retinol/retinoids and salicylic acid. Mostly found in skincare products but may also pop up from time to time in treatment foundations and concealers, particularly anti-ageing or acne- and blemish-control formulas, so it’s best to check your current foundation stash for those ingredients.
Nonetheless it is amazing how growing this tiny, delicate being inside of us and all that sudden sense of newfound responsibility can often cause even the most die-hard cosmetic slaves amongst us (waves, hi there!) to suddenly become aware of what we are putting into and onto our bodies.
Between that and some of the many skin changes that may uncharacteristically arise depending on which hormone hand you get dealt; acne, dryness or suddenly easily-irritated skin means that many pregnant women gravitate towards gentler, more simple and natural products that may be free from fragrance, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, talc and/or preservatives, thus reducing their chemical exposure.
If you fall into that category, now might be the ideal time in your life to experiment with mineral make-up. Quality mineral foundations are pure and gentle but also have an anti-inflammatory effect thanks to the high zinc content and could be just the ticket for sensitised or break-out hormonal skin.
Not overlooking mineral make-up’s amazing soft-focus, concealing factor and physical sun-protection ability that can work to disguise and further prevent pregnancy pigmentation while still being sheer, natural and glowy – we do want to amp that 1000 watt pregnancy glow all we can right?
In my experience (major mineral make-up convert talking here), Bare Minerals Original SPF 15 Foundation, $34.95, Mecca Cosmetica, is the perfect entry point for making the transition. I had a serious WOW moment the first time I used it and I truly could not get over the coverage yet natural and light finish that didn’t feel dry or cakey like I had expected. Not to mention that lit-from-within, deal-sealing glow factor. Hello, yummy mummy alert!
If powders really are not your thing you could try Inika Certified Organic Liquid Mineral Foundation, $65, Inika. Inika have simply blended mineral pigments into a liquid base of pure skin goodness to produce a mineral foundation alternative that behaves just like any liquid foundation you may be accustomed to sans the synthetic ingredients.
One more piece of advice from one preggy to another: if you are partial to coordinating your mani with your maternity wear, it is also best to ensure the polishes you are using are 3-free as chemicals like toluene and formaldehyde again should also be avoided when with bump. The choice of 3-free polish ranges these days are vast; Butter London, Zoya, Priti NYC, Sally Hansen, Orly, Revlon and Essie to name just a few.
You are bound to find the prefect colour for your pedi amongst that lot. Make the most of it while you can still see your toes. I currently can’t but that certainly doesn’t stop me. Told you, a true die-hard!

When I was pregnant the smell of many of my skin care and makeup products was way too overpowering for me so I switched to brands like Clinique with very low or perfume free scents.

Everyone told me I had the elusive glow, I only felt it between 5-7 months though.
I never changed my makeup, only my skin care as I read retinol products could be harmful.

So pumped to have a question answered but just in case anyone I know in real life reads this, I’m not pregnant!
But I will gratefully mentally store this info and refer to it when that exciting time comes!
Thank you!

My skin broke out in acne in the 1st 3 months, but calmed down after that thankfully.

I was blessed with AMAZING skin throughout my pregnancy! It glowed
Unfortunately it went in exactly the opposite direction after though n I now find myself suffering from regular breakouts

Pregnant women can suffer chloasma or “the mask of pregnancy”. This means you get brown pigmentation on areas of your face. So from someone who got it on my 3rd pregnancy, I cannot stress enough…sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen as the sun can make the hormones disfigure your skin.
! With my first baby, I was blessed with the best skin of my life, with my second, it was great hair, but with my 3rd, I got awful pigmentation on the side of my face, which after 3years is yet to disappear although has faded somewhat with the use of lightening creams. I think the only way to get rid of it permanently is to have a peel or light therapy or something, which I’m too chicken to mess with.
I also got rid of anything with vitamin A and retinoids in any of my skin care. Just be sensible and above all, don’t forget to enjoy this awesome time! Good luck xo

I was only 20 when I had my first, my skin actually calmed down when I was pregnant, I used to be prone to pimples but when I was pregnant it cleared up!
