Fade dark circles

Eye creams

Your eye cream options are endless. Obviously, choose one specifically for treating dark circles. But also look for ingredients such as minerals and botanicals to help control pigmentation.

Potato pampering

Potatoes have skin-lightening enzymes called catecholase, which temporarily help fade circles. Leave two thin slices over each eye for 10 minutes, twice a week. The juices will seep into the skin and even out your skin tone.

Tip: Use the remaining potato to make a delicious yet low-fat potato salad for dinner.

Stay out of the sun

Stop dark circles from worsening by staying out of the sun. It doesn’t take long for the sun to damage the thin layer around the eyes, and cumulative sun damage causes circles to darken further. Always apply sunscreen before stepping outside. Find a sensitive formula that won’t sting your eyes. No point fighting one problem (dark circles) and ending up with another (red, irritated eyes).

Try Clinique Super City Block SPF 30+, $36.

Allergy season

If you find your circles worsen with your hay fever, there’s probably a direct correlation. Allergies swell the vessels under your skin, and when you rub your eyes you can bruise those same vessels. Next thing you know you’ve caused a dark appearance around the eye. Treating your allergies will stop the rubbing… and stop the black eyes. Yippee.

In the meantime

Until you get your discolouration under control, makeup will give you a quick fix. Instead of piling on your usual concealer, purchase a yellow or peach based concealer to balance the purply blueness of your circles.

Try Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Corrector, $45.
