How to: Do a Super-Easy Skin-Brightening Facial

Mon, 9 July 2012 2:53PM

Glowy skin never goes out of style. But while it’s in fashion every season, it’s especially lust-worthy in winter, when the winds and chill can zap skin of its soft suppleness. Here’s how to get your glow back … without having to leave your bathroom.

  • Remove all traces of makeup with a creamy cleanser. Wipe off with a gentle cloth, and pat dry.
  • Now it’s time to really clean your skin. So, take a cleanser formulated with alpha hydroxy acids (such as glycolic) or beta hydroxy acids (salicylic), which will get right down into the pores. For example: MD Formulations Facial Cleanser with Glycolic, $85, 1800 808 993, or Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser, $13.99, from pharmacies. Lather up with warm water and massage into skin. Wash off and, once more, pat skin dry.
  • Next step: apply a DIY version of a salon peel. Try an acid-based mask, or one formulated with enzymes. Such as: Avon Anew Clinical Advanced Retexturizing Peel, $59.99, 1800 646 000, or Alba Botanica Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask, $16.95, 1300 762 025. Either way, they work to dissolve dead, dull skin while on your face. As for timing, follow the instructions on the label.
  • Now you’ve effectively exfoliated your skin. So it’s time to give back some TLC. Grab a vitamin or moisture mask (we love Dermalogica Age Smart MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque, $76, 1800 659 118), and massage it in for a couple of minutes. This will help work the ingredients into skin; and the massage action itself will help conjure up a pretty rosy glow. Leave mask on for about 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with warm water and apply an antioxidant-rich moisturiser to slightly-damp skin.

So, there you have it: brighter skin in five simple steps. Are you tempted to try it?

Or do you have any other skin-glowifying tips you can share?

on the other hand, i may have over exfoliated the glow out of my skin. But ive heard of the baking soda added to your face wash for brightening.

ta Kat! Am after a good new moisturiser (for night mainly).. could you recommend a good antioxidant-rich one (not too $)? Ta! :) x

Hi Bels. I love love love Origins’ night creams, especially Night-a-Mins (from Kit). If they’re a little pricey though, Natio has some lovey options (from DJs, Myer and selected pharmacies). xx

I love the MD formulations cleanser! Would love to try the Alba Mask. I don’t have an anti-oxidant rich moisturiser, I usually just apply rose hip oil, let it sink in a bit and then follow with my regular moisturiser! Would love to try and Origins one though.

I am slightly afraid of acid based masks, is the Alba safe for sensitive skin? Vitamin C+E antioxidant moisturizers are lovely, but really expensive. I use them during the day under sunscreen.

an amazing mask – one that i love and HIGHLY recommend – is the Ella Bache energising mask. its thick and creamy and you can put it all over the face including delicate eye area and lips so you are doing an eye mask at the same time :) score!

I have super sensitive skin which has resulted in Rosacea over time. Would this be ok for me to do on my skin? I was in Priceline a few weeks ago & the lady working told me to steer away from anything with acid or alcohol. Which pretty much rules out every skin product!
I would love to be able to do a nice (and preferably cheap) facial or treatment at home! Does anyone have any advice?
At the moment day & night I am using cetaphil as a cleanser & washing off with a warm face washer & then using nude by nature BB cream & moisturiser. It keeps my skin hydrated & smooth but I can’t seem to shake my red cheeks and nose!!! xx

Hi Ami_Jo. I have rosacea too and it’s a pain in the butt. How about I schedule a how-to feature on rosacea to run in the next couple of weeks? In the meantime, it sounds like you’re doing a lot of things right, just make sure the water isn’t too warm, and think of adding in a calming serum/cream, such as the ones by First Aid Beauty or Avene. where can i buy these products online – a website that covers all three brands you have used – please?

  • Posted by: Kell // Mon, 16 July 2012 10:09am

Standards in my shower are Bicarb Soda, Manuka Honey and Coconut oil. best stuff for my face. Bicarb is used once or twice per week. I only use a cleanser at the end of the day., to remove dirt and small amounts of makeup.

Hi Donna. As far as I know, you can only buy two of the brands (Dermalogica, MD Formulations) online – at adorebeauty.com.au … Neutrogena is from pharmacies, Alba is at David Jones, and Avon is via a sales rep (see avon.com.au for more info). Kat x

Thx for the inspiration, must make the time to add a mask to weekly routine (as I used to do before child :0)

BHA (salicylic) liquid, left to dry, then apply rosehip oil & sweet almond oil directly to face as a moisturiser. I go out makeup free after this, and I swear the sweet almond oil gives my skin such a beautiful healthy glow. I can’t recommend this enough.

Definitely tempted to try it. It’s been ages since I had a facial. They cut into my beauty product budget. Oh, the irony!!!

I’d love to try it! It’s always better for people to do it on me because it’s just more relaxing that way.
