Bella Heathcote Shows: How to Wear Makeuppy Makeup

Fri, 7 December 2012 12:30PM

You probably know we have a soft spot for Aussie actress Bella Heathcote. Why, just the other day we nominated her one of the beauty up-and-comers of 2012.

And I’m sure you’re aware we like our makeup here at PRIMPED. Er, just a tad.

But I have to admit, I’m personally usually too chicken to wear that much of it. That’s because there are so few examples out there of how to wear a lot of makeup well. On the catwalk, sure, it’s all about heavy-handed blush and crazy eye shadow and lashings of lipstick, often all at once. But they’re models and it’s their job to look good no matter what’s thrown at them, be it a dress that looks like a plastic bag or a yellow eye shadow or some old leathery ex-rocker boyfriend.

On the red carpet – our usual inspiration hunting-ground for makeup, considering that celebrities are much more like us than the genetic freaks of nature known as models – most stars are quite minimal in their makeup approach. They’ll wear a strong lip or a statement eye, and maybe a something-something going on at the cheek. And that’s about it.

But every now and then, there comes along a brave soul to show us how to really have fun with makeup.

Enter Bella, and her latest makeup look:

So, as you can gather, there’s quite a bit of maquillage action going on.

I mean, compare it to the fresh-faced look she showed at an event earlier that day:

Of course, Bella could wear no makeup at all and still look ridiculously bella, but most of us do need a bit of warpaint on a regular day. Sometimes more than a bit. So let’s focus back on her makeuppy look, and how it works:

1. The Lips are Strong but Sheer. It’s a rich berry shade, but made light and wearable because the pigment has been diluted by a liquid or balm. It doesn’t look heavy – because it’s not. And you get almost the same wow factor that you do with a statement lipstick – yet with only about a thirteenth (give or take) of the application effort needed. Try Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantique, $17.95, from pharmacies, and top it with clear gloss for extra glam.

2. The Blush is also Strong – and also Sheer! We tend to mostly blush on shades of pale pink and neutral-ish browns and peaches – but it’s totally possible to wear stronger colours, if you apply them lightly. You could use a cream blush, which is sheer and diluted by definition, but my hunch is that Bella has gone for a powder blush, yet whisked it on with a big soft fluffy brush to get the same kind of soft effect.

NB, Primpers! if you’re wearing a lot of makeup, sheer is one way to ensure you pull it off. The other is to mix up your textures. So that’s another reason to go for a powder blush – it contrasts so well against the shine of the lips. What’s more, if you’re wearing major makeup, your base is best flawless, which tends to mean it should be finished off with translucent powder; with this in mind, it makes sense to work it back to a powder blush, don’t you agree?

3. The Eyes are Heavy, yet Immaculately Blended. These days, I’m mostly a single-shade shadow kind of a girl (busy, lazy, scared, so many reasons). But this photo has had me reconsidering a shadow quad. It sounds so ‘80s of me, doesn’t it? But the thing is, unlike how they did things in that style-challenged decade, the way to wear a quad these days is to go for shades in the same colour family, and blend-blend-blend to perfection.

As coincidence would have it, an email popped into my inbox this morning alerting me to the launch of the new L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Les Ombres quads*, $23.95, from pharmacies. Here’s the shade Incredible Grey:

And to get Bella’s look, here’s how you’d use it:

Step One: Apply the dove-grey hue all over, from the brow down, using a regular shadow brush.

Step Two: With the same brush, or a soft blending one, work the mid-grey shade through the crease of the lids, in a back-and-forth motion. This technique is designed to enhance eye definition, but you could also create a cat’s eye effect by winging the colour out slightly, as Bella has done. Dust some of the same shade along the lower lashline, too.

Step Three: Dampen a liner brush, and etch the darkest shade all along the upper lashline, creating a liquid liner-like look.

Step Four: Take a sponge-tipped applicator, or even your pinkie, and dab the highlighter shade in your eyes’ inners corners, and just under the browbone.

Finally, 4. The Hair is Loose and Low-Key. Imagine if Bella was wearing carefully coiled curls or a big blow-out. It could all look a little studied or done, right? By matching her high-octane makeup with low-key hair, she balances it all out and comes across looking fresh and modern.

* the new L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Les Ombres quads come in eight palette choices, mostly with shades in the one family, but there are also some multi-coloured numbers, such as Disco Smoking, pictured on the left below, for any of you who have been really inspired to amp up your makeup for party season.

What do you think, Primpers? Have I inspired you to up the makeup factor for this Friday night?

And have you worn an eyeshadow quad any time since the 1980s?

Yes I had forgotten for a while there about colour quads, and I really miss a lot of colour in my makeup. You have inspired me to play it up big time this weekend. What better time than christmas to play around with colour?

Bella reminds me very much of the current blonde Estee Lauder model.

Oooh, I can’t wait to try out the new L’Oreal quads. I have a few eyeshadow quads which I use when I am amping up my makeup look but tend to stick to the one colour during the week.

Holy moly those L’Oreal colour quads look delightful don’t they? Might have to buy myself an early Christmas pressie. I’ve been looking for some nice greys.

I love Bella’s look in that first pic. I don’t think it looks overdone. She looks polished.

Love this look! I do this regularly but with a more pinkish tone on the lips and cheeks. I am obsessed with eyeshadow blending right now and as for quads, I have seen quite a few pretty colours around lately, may have to invest :)

I LOVE eyeshadow quads – but then I grew up in the 80s, lol! Now I have plenty of singles but nothing beats a quad for ease of use and foolproof colour! Loving that green L’Oreal one :)

I must admit I am a sucker for quads… which probably shows my age! Gosh Bella is so beautiful, she has amazing eyes and bone structure. I love the top look, the vibrant makeup and her tousled hair suits her so well.

She looks good, but I still wouldn’t want to wear that much colour.. I’d go for a nude lip over the berry colour.
I have a Revlon quad in the purple shades, but that loreal one in the greys are nice looking.

love the colour on her lips – gonna give the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantique a go – I have a red in the just bitten range and love that it gives just the right amount of colour

She can pull of this over makeup look…I couldn’t. I think it’s fine if you can do it in proportion with the rest of your look..

The name Bella really suits her. She is bella! She looks effortlessly beautiful with very little makeup. So she must have flawless skin.

I love the purple quad from this new L’Oréal eye shadow collection.

Oh so pretty! I like quads because they have the colours that you need to make a good look. But remember the golden rule: blend, and blend well.

i love the looks of those loreal shadows

Dare I say it, I love quads! I haven’t used all 4 colours at once since the 80′s though :) instead I chose just one colour for the night and perhaps a lighter shade for a touch of highlighting… but bring on all four colours in the emerald palette, they look awesome!

  • Posted by: Louise-1295043242 Master Fan // Thu, 11 April 2013 05:36pm

It takes a great make up artist to be able to accentuate the eyes, lips and cheeks and not make her look over done! I however think I can’t match this -best to stick with eyes or lips and keep the rest minimal!
