How to: Ashley Madekwe’s Party-Perfect Bold Lip and Liquid Liner Combo

Fri, 21 December 2012 12:05PM

Little shouts party season like a slick of winged eyeliner and bold pout and, of course, our inspiration comes from Ashley Madekwe, who has made the look her signature since she landed on our TV screens as Ashley Davenport in Revenge. Perfect for a glamorous night out on the town this party season, wouldn’t you say Primpers?

WINGED EYELINER: Begin by lining your upper lashes using an angled eyeliner brush and a pot of black eyeliner like M.A.C Cosmetics Fluidline in Blacktrack, $32, M.A.C. Resting your elbow on a table, close your eyes, and pull the eyelid skin taut by placing a fingertip at your temple. Starting in the inner corner, carefully outline your eye, finishing with a short flick on the outer corners. Then coat your lashes with Benefit They’re Real Mascara, $38, Myer, which works to lengthen and add volume. For extra va-va-voom, add a few individual false lashes along the outer edges of your lashes.

BRONZED BASE: Notice how Ashley’s flawless base blends in beautifully with her golden skin on her neck and décolletage. There are a few options you could consider when it comes to add warmth to your complexion. Try a fake tan designed specifically for your face, like St Tropez Natural Radiance Self Tan for Face, $34.95, Priceline, a moisture-infused cream which not only amps up the bronze factor, but also gives good – and natural-looking – glow. Otherwise you could apply your own foundation, then grab your bronzer and, with a fluffy brush, lightly dust it on your face where the sun would naturally hit (the forehead, the cheekbones, the nose and chin). Sweep a little extra bronzer under the cheekbones for some contoured definition.

SLEEK HAIR: We love how Ashley slicked her hair back here, save for her fringe falling gently over her eye – it’s a little minxy, yet still elegant. However if you don’t have a fringe, never fear; having all of your hair pulled back looks beautiful, too, and puts the spotlight on your statement makeup. Just flip your head back a little and, using a ceramic round brush, gather your hair back into a mid-height ponytail. Flip back upright and smooth out any bumps on the surface of hair with your fingers before securing the ponytail with a clear elastic. Optional step: style up a donut bun. Finally, add a spritz of stronghold hairspray, which is also great for smoothing any flyaways around your hairline.

BERRY LIPS: The starring feature of Ashley’s look is her bold berry pout. To copy-cat it, forgo your stain or tint and use a creamy, hydrating lipstick like L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge in Refined Ruby, $24.95, from pharmacies. Apply at least two coats (ideally over a layer of berry-hued lip liner), ensuring that you blot with a tissue between each coat so that your colour lasts throughout a few glasses of champagne. A bold lip does require maintenance, though, so don’t forget to slip your lippie in your clutch for touch-ups throughout the night.

What do you think, Primpers, do you like this signature beauty look?

Do you ever wear berry lipstick or do you favour hot pink or red?

I don’t think berry really suits my skin tone. It’s not the first colour I immediately seek out, so I usually go on what colour attracts me ( like a magpie, I like sparklie things, lol ).

SAX do a great berry lipstick! I think it’s called Berry Delight and last year I literally used the whole tube up, I was absolutely addicted. It was the perfect, deep berry and it looked great with a hint of bronzer.

I love a good berry lip. When I’m feeling adventurous I wear MAC’s ‘rebel’, it goes so well with lighter skin tones for those paler girls out there like me.
